My DD is in Army ROTC. I had to looked up some information on financial aid at her school for someone local about AFROTC and found something interesting that might be of use to the SAF community.

University of Portland AFROTC

Students receiving a Type 2 AF ROTC Scholarship receive Air Force Tuition Discount for the difference between the total required tuition and fees (excluding health insurance, student activities fees, student health and counseling fees, private music or voice lessons, and fine arts labs) and $9,000 (the common amount of a Type 2 Scholarship) per semester.

If someone decides to transfer the Type 7 AF ROTC scholarship to a 3 year Type 2 (I think that is how it works, someone please correct me if I am wrong). Then the following information would also be of interest -

AFROTC Room and Board Waiver -

Cadets living in the residence halls actively receiving an ROTC scholarship will have their UP Air Force ROTC Room and Board Scholarship award amount calculated using the following formula: Total room and board charges (not including amenities fees) – total outside scholarships – Oregon Opportunity Grant – total Federal grant aid = UP Air Force ROTC Room and Board Scholarship (Capped at $6,587/each eligible semester (fall/spring)) Cadets with a three year scholarship will receive the cap in full their freshman year, regardless of other aid, so long as they are otherwise eligible for aid.

And I will add from personal experience. Tuition and Fees are about $44,000 for the freshman year, my DD received a 3 year AROTC scholarship and her room and board was waived and the cap covered it 100%. However, the freshman year, the school allows students to use their merit aid and grants awarded. The school has a very impressive endowment, and so most middle class students will receive school based grant aid plus anyone earning a national ROTC scholarship will have the grades and test scores to receive merit aid. So that $44,000 dollars the first year (Room and board cap will pay double occupancy and meal plan #2), will be significantly less.

I will post this in room and board also.

University of Portland is a great private catholic liberal arts school in the Pacific Northwest situated on a bluff over looking Portland, Oregon. The Air Force detachment is over 65 years old and one of the largest commissioning Air Force ROTC programs, even though the university only has 4,800 students (This is all from the UP website). The school has a great nursing program and engineering program as well as over 40 other majors. Anyway, I am sure most readers have never heard of it, but I thought the financial aid package for national scholarship winners for AFROTC was impressive, even if not receiving a Type 1. And being a PNW native, I can attest, that while we do have a lot of rain, with that comes one of the most beautiful green landscapes you can imagine. And "The Bluff" as the UP campus is referred to, has great training ground as it is situated next to forest, and below is the river campus, where there is also a lot of training rich environment. The city is a 20 minute bus ride, or 10 minute Uber ride.

Agreed...DS was able to turn his type 7 scholarship into a type 2 at UP. He got free r&b for 5 years (EE major) and merit scholarship covered 50% tuition freshman year so we figure we only had to pick up one semester of about $250,000 bill. UP AFROTC has won Right of Line award twice in less than 10 years so the detachment is extremely well run. As a bonus...where else can you be a Pilot just by enrolling (go Portland Pilots!!) I’m obviously biased, but it’s a great option to look at.
