AFROTC Type 7 Tech, major question...

My son was notified of the award offer yesterday, he was/is thrilled, having worked so hard and getting the offer has been a very gratifying experience for him, and of course for us.

Now that his path forward is clearer, he/we has also come to the realization that the environmental engineering major (Tier 2/high) he selected is not available at the one in-state AFROTC school we have ,and changing to civil engineering or any other Tier 2/high is more math intensive than he's comfortable with, and makes my wife (a college professor) very uncomfortable. (we realize environ. engineering is math intensive as well)

Here's my questions.
  1. Having been offered the Type 7, tech which was based on a Tier 2 high/tech major, is it possible to change to a Tier 3/moderate tech without it effecting his offer?
  2. Is this a question for AFROTC HQ or the detachment he selects?
  3. Are there typically a cap on the number of detachment slots? Better to decide early to guarantee a slot in at the desired detachment?
Thank you for your time.

Specific questions about changing majors need to be answered, and approved, by the school's cadre. There isn't a ranking of tech - it either is or isn't. My DS switched from engineering to computer science with an email. Since the detachments have a mix of scholarship and non-scholarship students, I doubt there is a risk of losing your slot.

I called 866/423-7682 x1 for Cadet command. We could not remember which engineering major we put first. I was told that if it is technical major, it doesn't matter.
Pick any of the 18 from the technical list.

Jebersole I think you are mixing and matching ROTC programs.

1. AFROTC does not have a tier like NROTC. You are either TECH or NonTech.
2. This is really an HQ AFROTC question. You can ask the det., but in the end HQ must approve.
3. Again AFROTC is not like AROTC or NROTC. They could not care less if the det has 100% on scholarship or 0%. The scholarship is tied to the cadet and their major, not the school or the det.

Beware AFROTC scholarships are very unique. It is a quasi 4 yr scholarship. Posters here call it a 2 + 2. It is guaranteed for 2 yrs., but if they are not slected for SFT aka LEAD than HQ has the right to dis-enroll them as a junior, and revoke the scholarship for their final two years.

Aha, you are correct, NROTC has the tiers. I had received the list with tiers from a local AFROTC detachment by email the other day and didn't even think to check elsewhere. Thank you!
