Hello all,
As of today, my waiver from AETC for a history of malignant tumors (11 years cured) has been denied. My technician said that I can provide "rebuttal information", presumably for an appeal, but I'm confused as to what that means. Also, I have emailed my university's Naval and Army ROTC detachments, and was wondering if they would be able to take me. It is my dream to be a military aviator; is that possible for me? Thanks for any and all input.

It was a tumor related to lymphoma, I was treated with 9 months of chemo, including the drug doxorubicin. No long term side effects. Would the army or navy let me in?

Gosh, this is a very tough one because you're 11 years out. Unfortunately, having a history of NHL puts you at increased risk of other cancers like malignant melanoma and leukemia. Maybe that's what the USAF is concerned about.

Did you submit all the labs they asked for? Or did the USAF even ask for specific labs? Since you had doxorubicin, they probably would have wanted an echocardiogram or MUGA (multigated acquisition) scan because that medicine can give you an enlarged heart. Other labs would also include beta-2 macroglobulin and serum electrophoresis. Did these get included in your submission too?

A waiver is actually possible to fly in the services but not easy. It's happened before for flying class I in the USAF.

My gut feeling is the USN and USA won't waiver since the USAF didn't waiver even 11 years out. It's definitely worth the effort though to push a waiver through for the USN and USA.

AF just requested all medical records pertinent to cancer. I sent it in along with a letter of rec from my long term follow up doc, and still got a straight denial. The labs should've been in my records

At this point I just go in for some blood tests, and an EKG every 2-3 years to make sure everything is normal. There hasn't been one negative mark on my record in the almost 12 years I've been in remission.
