I plan on joining the AFROTC and I just wanted to know if my chances of getting a scholarship for a major in Mandarin, Chinese are high or not? I know the Air Force prioritizes certain majors and I have done my research but I don't know if a foreign language major is a highly sought out major in the Air Force or not.
Just in case you are wondering, I chose this major because of my extensive knowledge of the language since I have been studying Mandarin for more than 10 years.
Any further information would be very helpful. Thank you very much

This is from the AFROTC website: (bold is mine)

The most highly desired majors for AFROTC cadets are electrical engineering, computer engineering, meteorology, nuclear physics and nuclear engineering. Scholarship applicants selecting these majors might receive priority in the scholarship selection process. We encourage HSSP applicants to apply and pursue technical and foreign language majors, as they are critical to the Air Force's mission. Technical scholarship offers are awarded at a rate of approximately 80 percent, followed by foreign language majors. Very few foreign language nontechnical scholarships are awarded.

By saying "nontechnical" foreign language scholarships do they mean scholarships that do not require speaking the language or conversing in Chinese? So I would recieve a TECHNICAL foreign language scholarship if I majored in Mandarin Chinese - which would require conversing and knowledge of the chinese language ?

Technical refers to any approved STEM focused major (engineering, computer science, etc.) Languages do not fall into that category. The Air Force is currently expanding its officer corps, and AFROTC scholarships are in good supply as of right now. Everyone in my class that is eligible to receive one has one, with degrees ranging from electrical engineering to business. However, don't go into the program expecting one if money is the primary motivator. You have no way of knowing if and when you might receive a scholarship. It could be right away or it could be a year from now. At that point, the Air Force might have slowed down its expansion and greatly reduced the number of scholarships, or a medical issue might be in the way that slows down or even stops the process as well.

Bottom line: in the current climate, odds are good that if you work your butt off and are a good cadet you will get one at some point. However, that's if and only if the climate does not change, which it very well could. If you join, make sure it's because you want to serve your country as an officer and come ready to work hard even without any monetary benefit. There are much easier ways to earn money for school than ROTC if that isn't the case.

I would also like to ask if it is possible to apply for more than one scholarship, say AFROTC and AROTC? Or are you only supposed to apply for one?

There are no restrictions. Many apply for multiple branch ROTC scholarships.

My son received a Foreign Language scholarship and he is studying Russian. If you're leadership, GPA, test scores, and physical fitness is good, it would seem you have a good shot given your extensive background in Mandarin. Just remember the Foreign Language scholarship is not a Type 1, so it does not cover full tuition.
