After USMMA Appointment Acceptance - Next Steps

Last year the parents were given the Company number for their plebe on reporting day. We were given a folder with lots of information and inside it was written their company number. I didn't address the envelopes with the Company # though - that's probably a good idea. I addressed his mail like this:
Plebe Candidate John Doe, 2022
US Merchant Marine Academy
300 Steamboat Road
Kings Point, NY 11024-1699

I created some "letters" that I sent to my son for him to send back to me, and enclosed self-addressed stamped envelopes. The letters I created were funny things with boxes that he would check off. This is a part of one of them:

I was looking through the 2022 Logging Reporting Instructions for my DS. He has not yet received his BFE and Reporting In instructions for Class 2023. The Plebe Personal Items Kit is mentioned that you can buy from the Midshipman store. Does anyone have experience with this kit? Does it come with the white mesh laundry bag they say all the personal item should be packed in? Where does my DS pick this kit up from when he arrives at USMMA? Same with the Laptop /package and Education Kit.
 
You should definitely buy both the personal items kit and laptop/printer package from USMNA. The personal items kit came with the mesh laundry bag for my DD (class of 2021). If you buy the items from USMMA, they will be waiting for your Plebe candidate in his/her room when they get there. That means they will have all the right stuff and they will not have to lug it around all day. Make sure to place your order as soon as it becomes available because it is first come first served and they run out of some items every year.

Thanks kpmom2013, DS is still waiting for the BFE. His admissions officer said it should arrive early next week so hooping to get all the latest information. We are just wanting to get a jump on everything. DS is getting his Tdap/Accllulus and MenB shots today (only ones he was missing) and wisdom teeth out on April 20th. Can we go ahead and apply for the TWIC card now or do will need something official that come in the BFE to present along with his application for the TWIC? Also DS will take the Haven Training asap.
 
Yes, go ahead and have him get his twice now. They tell you it will take 8 weeks to get the card, but for both my DSvand DD, it was under 2 weeks.
 
Can anyone save me all the reading on wisdom teeth and give me a little direction for my DS? Have them out before reporting?
 
My DS had only two wisdom teeth - lower jaw, one was erupted, the other one wasn't. One of the wisdom teeth was slightly painful all the time, so he needed to get rid of them. He first got the erupted wisdom tooth extracted and after three weeks the other one out. The second one was more complicated since it was not erupted and was positioned under an angle pushing the other teeth. He did have time and wanted to use one side to eat until the other one heals. If you don't have time get the wisdom teeth extracted at once. It might be more stressful and painful afterwards, but when time is of essence you have to do it. Talk with your dentist first and make a plan.
 
Get the wisdom teeth out now. The dentist at Kings Point will not clear you for Sea Year until they are gone. We tried to appeal but were unsuccessful. The breaks at USMMA are so short that it is tough to do once they report. There is an option to do it in New York, but I would not risk it in case there are complications.
 
All you need for the twic is to say maritime education. Or usmma. Does not matter. Get a passport or get the existing one renewed. And ditto on the purchase of the package from the nex beforehand. Anything you buy and bring with you, you get to carry around with you. Keep your "carry on" to a small duffel

When do the kits become available?
 
Kits are available as soon as the permit to report package comes out. It will be on the USMMA website plus you should get a hard copy in the mail. Usually early May.

Is PT Gear supplied like the uniforms? I read some where that you needed to bring your own. I understand you bring your own running shoes. But just wasn't cleat about the rest of the PT Gear.
 
Your PT gear will be supplied by KP. You have to place the order with your sizes ahead of time. My kids were both fine with the suggested minimum order, but many people order extra t-shirts and shorts. Again, order early because they always seem to run out of some sizes.

Where to you place your order? Is that information that will be included in the Class 2023 documentation we will get?
 
The kit, including computer, printer, and all essentials will probably run about 4k. I think that's what it was. Just so you can plan saving the pennies the next several weeks.
 
My DS is making progress on being ready for July 5th:

1. Applied for TWCI card today and was told it would take about one month
2. Wisdom teeth (has 4) - are coming out this Saturday
3. He is working out following the program instructions from Coach Toop
4. He is watching weight to make sure he is under the BCA 22%
5. We confirmed that my work issued Medical Insurance will cover DS at Kings Point and during Sea Year
6. He needs two more shots for that we will do in the next week
6. DS will be setting up is Navy Federal Checking Account sometime in May

Did I miss anything we should be working on? Waiting on the 2023 Logging IN document in May so we can order Personal Gear and Laptop.

When ordering the Education Kit should be get both the Deck and Engineer Kits?

We are starting to plan out trip to Kings Point wanting to arrive on July 4th.

Wow. You guys are sure efficient! You are on the right track with everything. You will only buy the deck OR the engineer kit, not both. You can wait until second trimester for that. Believe it or not, some plebes change their minds on which path they want to take during their first trimester intro classes.

Any duffel bag or suitcase will do. If you are buying the personal gear kit from USMMA, there won't be that much to haul around on the first day of INDOC. My DS and DD just brought a small suitcase so they could use it as a carry on for trips home. Some Plebe Candidates wore a backpack. There is a wide variety of choices. You can see some examples of duffels in this clip from INDOC for class of 2021.
