After USMMA Appointment Acceptance - Next Steps

As I stated earlier my DS will have all four of his Wisdon Teeth extracted on 4/20. Based upon other experiences should he be ready for July 5th? I read on the internet: "Most people fully recover from wisdom teeth surgery in three to four days.....The wound left behind after surgery won't be completely healed for months, so you can still develop an infection weeks after surgery." Of course my DS needs to finish out his Senior year, go tp prom, etc. Also needs to continue to do his work outs. It was many years ago as an younger Adult that I had my wisdon teeth removed and if I recall correctly I was back to work in a couple of days. Looking for others' experiences.

My DS had only two wisdom teeth. He first extracted one and after 4 weeks the second one. Like you said there was a small open wound in his mouth, which made it uncomfortable to eat on that side and sometimes food will get trapped. Therefore there was time between the tooth extractions - to allow for the wound to heal and to have at least one side to eat, without any discomfort. If the wisdom tooth is fully erupted, then the extraction is not very complicated. The first one of the extractions was done in the dentist office. The second wisdom tooth was more complicated - not erupted at all, growing under an angle, pushing the rest of the teeth and causing occasional pain. The second one required a surgery, but with local anesthesia only. Talk to your dentist and decide on a plan. It depends on the wisdom tooth situations. Again, the dentist is the professional and he will give you the best advice.

How long did it take to recover from the second one?

My dad used my account earlier, but it takes a couple weeks for full recovery from removal to when I could eat without discomfort. The hole is still closing up, but that should be healed soon.

How long were you told it will take for the hole to close up? My son is having his extracted tomorrow. So he will have 11 weeks for all to heal before July 5th.

Any suggestions on the best duffle bag for my DS?....any where to purchase it?
Any duffel bag or suitcase will do. If you are buying the personal gear kit from USMMA, there won't be that much to haul around on the first day of INDOC. My DS and DD just brought a small suitcase so they could use it as a carry on for trips home. Some Plebe Candidates wore a backpack. There is a wide variety of choices. You can see some examples of duffels in this clip from INDOC for class of 2021.

Love that video! Thanks for bringing back the good memory. :)

Your dentist is your best source of advice here. Our DD had all 4 of hers out (two impacted) at home before working at INDOC after Plebe year. She only had one week at home. She returned to school and had the KP dentist remove her sutures. She never had any problems or any limitations on her activities. (Had all done at once with only a local--she is a beast!). Absent some unusual complications, your DS should be fine by INDOC.

My DS had all four wisdom teeth done on a Thursday and resumed normal activities on Monday. As long as there are no complications, it’s relatively simple. First day or two after aren’t fun.

Another question. Is there a store at the Academy for your DS/DD to purchase toiletry articles – razor (electric or manual), shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, foot care products, etc. I know they are supposed to bring with them, but items like shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant they bring on July 5th will not last the entire year.

Yes. There is a small NEX on campus. Items like these are pretty expensive there. I would recommend sending enough with your plebe candidate to last until parents weekend. Then if you visit on parents weekend, bring enough to last until Christmas break. If you can't come for a visit, it would probably be cheaper to put stuff in a care package than buy it on campus. Lots of mids use Amazon pretty regularly too.

I'm thinking I probably need to book hotels soon for reporting day. Do you recommend arriving on July 4? Can the whole family (parents + siblings) come for drop-off? Do grandparents go?

Yes, book hotels! We have learned with our older two (USAFA and Penn State) to book as early as possible. You can always cancel. We have reporting day and Parent's weekend booked.
Unless you live incredibly close I recommend July 4th.

We are trying to determine if we should drive or fly into New York for Indoc. If we drive it's about 1,000 miles and will take 15 hours. Flying is also an option, but more expensive (three tickets; no car unless rent one). When DS made his visit we flew and than took Uber to get around including a visit into NY City. It's certainly faster than driving, but having the car is nice. Travel by car will give DS a reimbursement of $545 for the 1,000 miles. If we fly USMMA will cover DS ticket. We are trying to manage cost plus time. I'm interest in others experience in making these travel arrangements.

JMPO, the dynamics of each family is different but I would not typically recommend bringing grandparents or extended family groups to reporting day. Reporting to the USMMA can be a very stressful time for both the parents and the plebes so you may want to keep things simple for this event.

Parents weekend is a great time to share KP with the grandparents.

Thank you! This is very helpful. I was thinking it was going to be very stressful for all of us. To be honest, I don't want to share him with anyone else prior to reporting day

Each family is different, but we sent both our kids by themselves to report to INDOC, and they were both glad we did. We are a very tight knit family, and the rushed farewell at Kings Point would have added to everyone's stress level. There is not much for families to do on that day. We said our goodbyes at the airport. Reporting day is stressful enough without your plebe candidate having to worry about catching a glimpse of his/her family, seeing mom crying, etc. Parents weekend is the time to visit where your plebe will be much more relaxed and there will be many events geared for extended family. Just my opinion.

For us, we drove to drop our son off for INDOC. We have 5 kids, and it was nice having the time alone with just my husband and I and our son. He reported for INDOC at 7 a.m. I don't think I saw any parents crying (I personally saved my tears for the drive home!) although I'm sure there were some. Seeing the Plebe Candidates go through the beginning of process was really neat. The area is roped off so you can't get close, but we still got to see them run to their barracks, get put into company formations, and we got to see their first official muster. We also were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of my son a few different times and some those pictures are my treasures. Like this one LOL :

Where do you find the information about reimbursement for air and car travel?

From the 2022 reporting instructions. "You are authorized travel expenses (mileage) at the Government mileage rate ($0.545) or Government rate by common carrier (whichever is least costly to the Government)." If my memory serves they will reimburse the least cost option only.
