AIM letters of recommendation

Who are the people who we need these from and are there any specific guidelines as to what must be in them?
 
Hey redtailedhawk, my DS went through this process a couple years ago for admission to AIM. If you are seriously considering USCGA then AIM is a great step in that direction.

I'm going from memory and from the USCGA website... http://uscga.edu/admissions2.aspx?id=91

It appears that only a guidance counselor LOR is required, but I would definitely use the 2 optional LORs. In the case of my DS, I believe he used his Calculus and Physics professor (same guy) and his AFJROTC SAI. I think that you provide the name, title and email address of the person that you want to give the recommendation and then they are contacted to do it online.

I think the application window opens in February and you should get all the details then. You could also talk to your AO.

I was also really in a quandary as to what the admissions folks were looking for in recommendations. At Cadet for a Day, LT. Plummer did a really good job of informing us what Admissions was looking for. One thing that she said that sticks out in my mind, "If your Math teacher only really talks about what a great soccer player you are, that is a red flag." So, you want your Math teacher to talk about how great you are in Math. You want your English teacher to assure Admissions that you can write a paragraph and otherwise communicate well with others. (Have your son or daughter tell the teacher these things.) I would also include people that can talk about your student's leadership skills. My son's boss, who's known him since he was 8 years old, wrote a very nice recommendation for him. His Swim Club Coach also wrote him a recommendation. I would pick at least one person who has known your son for a long time, so they have meaningful things to say. Finally, LT. Plummer told us to make sure that you know that the person that is writing the recommendation will definitely say something nice about your kid. She said that they have gotten letters telling Admissions, "Don't accept this applicant!" (Can you imagine??)

i am still in the process of the application, but all of my teachers have submitted there recommendations. How can I view them?
 
The submission date and time will show up in the Recommendations part of Bears Den. I don't believe you can view them. You can probably ask your teachers to see what they wrote about you.
 
you won't be able to view the recommendations.
 
Our DD was selected last summer. Recs from Guidance Counselor, Coach, and a family friend (business owner). They send a link to them, so you will not see the recs unless your student speaks with them or they make a document copy of the rec. The coach did send us a copy of it a few weeks later.
What do they write about? Well, we left that up to them, but I think there must be prompts for the recs as a guide. Our daughter is an above average student-- but "average" compared to many academy applicants. She is a good athlete, but again, not a record holder or superstar. She is not musical, and was not a class officer or debate team winner. What we were told by her recs was that her work ethic, patriotism, dedication to service, and the ability to get along with others was her strength (definitely a quiet leader). We were also told by senior CG commanders in our region that there is an "it" factor, not just grades that they are looking for. Very broad, and very holistic. The AIM program changed her life, her focus and direction. We are so grateful, and if she does not attend the Academy, it is still a win in our eyes.
