We are looking at travel arrangements. I was hoping to send DD solo like SLCDA and USMMA this spring, and SLE travel. At first we tried to find flights that arrive with ample time to catch the Academy transportation from PVD or BDL. But from where DD flies from, connections and arrival times are less than ideal - they are either so tight that I question if she would even make the 2nd leg, or the the arrival is after the stated 2pm cut off at PVD or BDL. Not to mention the many cancellations that seem customary now.

So now it opens up alternate plans, and I might just go and drop her off! We can do NYC 07/20 and then drive up the next day. On the back end, it looks like a day of programming for the parent, so we don't want to miss an opportunity if they have something substantial for the parent! 9-3pm parent schedule on 07/26. DH will have to fly up on this part since I can't miss work. But again, he'd have to fly up the night before and stay overnight.

Any advice or thoughts on this plan? I feel like i'm missing something, because all the other SA trips she's taken have been so much easier transportation-wise. Perhaps it's just that the others were near much more major airports for us, and had ample early arrival flights.

I checked all flight schedules but there is no direct flight to two airports USCGA recommended.

We decided to go to the JFK Airport first then visit USMA and USMMA.

During My son’s AIM program, I am driving around the areas for sightseeing.

So my DS’ AIM became my short vacation. Thanks USCGA! :)

@corescue59 gives great advice! Thank you so much!

@stanfordovaly2k , we decided to make a family vacation as well except....not at the same time! I will go up on the front end a few days, and DH will be on the back end and make it a staggered family vacation. At least there's no fighting over the hotel remote. It's more difficult air-flight wise, so this may be the only time we will have a chance to visit USCGA. I figured out that there is a few hours earlier window they must arrive, and they leave later so that limited the available same-day flights for us.

We intended to do the same thing in visiting the USMMA but according to their website, they are ‘blacked out’ for visits during the summer. Did you find something to the contrary? If so, please share.

Thanks in advance!

Just a suggestion for the return from AIM: get a direct flight if possible. We flew out of Providence on Southwest, stopping over in Baltimore. That time of year is prime for thunderstorms. Needless to say, we got delayed several hours. Had one very tired and exhausted daughter, storm delays, loads of other stranded people - it all added up to a less than desirable return trip. We got home about 1 am (4 hours later than originally scheduled). Was a very long day for all of us. Started us early on the Coast Guard parent motto: semper Gumby!
