I'm just curious as to what everyone wants to do in the Air Force after attending the Academy. I'm sure the majority of you will say you want to fly. If so, what are you hoping to fly?

I can't decide between the B2 or the C17... Does anybody know when they will retire the B2? Isn't it getting kind of old?

I think the B-2 has only been in use for about 10-15 years. Personally, I would prefer to fly either the F-35 or the A-10. I think the B-2 would also be a good choice.

F-22 or F-35 even A-10 would be nice ^^

If flying doesnt work out >.< security forces...

Your right, F-22 would be awesome too. What exactly do the security forces entail?

career

I'll probably work with R & D, I don't have the vision to be a pilot. In the end, I'll do whatever I'm needed to do, but I want to focus on space (I intend on being an astronautical engineering major)

I'll focus on getting through the next four years first....

but yes, I want to fly.

Backups jobs: well, there are so many out there that would be incredibly fun and challenging. Space Aggressor was one I saw the other day. That would be a cool job title, and looks like it would be very interesting/challenging/exciting

i have the same endgoal as you, space. hopefully becoming an astronaut but if not i can handle it. i do want to fly however. hopefully the f-16 or f-22. the a-10 is unfortunately being retired in the next few years so i doubt any one of us would be able to fly it.

I will be putting my application package in next semester for ENJPPT (boards meet June). So, I'm hoping for the fighter/bomber path. If not, I plan on going to Medical School.

So, what's your vision? Mine's pretty bad, and I strongly desire to be a pilot, so I was just wondering what yours was.

Thanks

Unless you have an eye disease (glaucoma, etc.) or another abnormality, the Academy offers PRK to bring your vision within limits to become a pilot.

The A-10's are currently undergoing weapon systems upgrades that are scheduled to be completed in 2011. Also, a large number of the A-10s were recently upgraded with new wings. So hopefully they will not retire any time soon.

really? because that would make me so much happier. the warthogs are amazing

I believe that the plan is for the F-35 to slowly replace the A-10. I saw a year around 2028 for this process to be complete, but that number could and probably will change.

I bet it will stay in longer than 2028.

true. i believe the kc-135's were supposed to be replaced in the 60s or 70s. but they got somewhat refitted and are still around, and still will be around through at least the 2020's. and the B-52's have been around since the late 50's if i am not mistaken, so there is that potential

So what exactly is the F-35 replacing? Isn't it also replacing the F-16? It seems odd that it would replace the A-10 since the two are not very similar at all. The A-10 is basically in a class of its own.

Bullet could answer this much better. But wiki to the rescue!

The A variant is primarily intended to replace the USAF's F-16 Fighting Falcons, beginning in 2013, and replace the A-10 Thunderbolt II starting in 2028

The U.S. Marine Corps intends to purchase 340 F-35Bs[112] to replace all current inventories of the F/A-18 Hornet, AV-8B Harrier II and EA-6B Prowler

The US Navy will be the sole user for the carrier variant. It intends to buy 480 F-35Cs to replace the F/A-18A, -B, -C, and -D Hornets.

Supposes to replace quite a few models actually.

I suppose I'm part of the minority that doesn't want to fly

My goal is become a combat rescue officer.

It is possible to fly after USNA, or?

I know I know, very stupid question, why would I want to go to the Naval Academy to fly, but I'm more interested in water, though I still want to fly!... I saw there's the option to be a MC Pilot, but only a few girls get in...

And by the way, if your eyesight can easily be corrected to 20/20 vision, can one still fly?
I have pretty weak contacts...

Each year more midshipmen are comissioned as Naval Pilots or Naval Aviators than any other branch of the navy.
