Air Force ROTC board problem now...

I'll agree with Pima on calling to see if there's anything amiss. My son was contacted by his ALO a few weeks ago saying he'd been contacted by a state coordinator who was looking at my son's stats online and wanted to confirm that he'd actually only done 9 situps on his PFA!

Obviously this wasn't the case, but if he hadn't checked with the ALO, who checked with my son, I don't know how we ever would have known that was what the problem was! He immediately faxed over the signed PFA sheet from his gym teacher again. It honestly could be as simple as that. Or possibly something wasn't in that needed to be from a counselor or teacher or similar.

Good luck and congrats to all!

You are very fortunate that they called the ALO.

Seriously, call the ALO or interviewer, 2 + 2 is not equaling 4.

32 ACT, engineering major, scholarships to other colleges just sounds off.

Ask the ALO to contact Maxwell before you contact Maxwell. You need to understand they already have a developed relationship and give more insight regarding your situation than you could imagine.

ALOs are LIAISONS they are the go betweens.

Just checked daughter's status:

•Congratulations! You were awarded a scholarship. You will be receiving written confirmation via mail within the next few weeks. If you have questions please notify HQ AFROTC/RRUC.

:yay:

I'm baffled too. My daughter could be your twin, but minus the Junior Olympian. Maybe the selection has something to do with the colleges listed on the application. My daughter only listed state schools--lower tuition. Just a thought. Hang in there. There is still plenty of time left

Good luck everyone and Merry Christmas!

Similar profile.

My son is grateful to have received a scholarship, but a little disappointed that it was a type 7. His first choice for schools is the University of Notre Dame, others were in-state. So far he has a Presidential Scholarship to the University of Portland (applied early) and hopeful that more will follow once all the college apps are in.

He's also a junior olympian, team captain cross country running, several varsity letters, eagle scout (and senior patrol leader), congressional award gold medal recipient, has a perfect GPA w/ 30+ college credits under his belt, 1000+ hours of community service, mechanical engineering major, interviewer told him that he'd for sure get a scholarship....

However, he had only a 30 on the ACT by the December 1st deadline (using Oct test results w/ a composite score of 34). He just rocked the SAT and got a 780 in math now that he's finished pre-Calculus, so we're thinking that sometimes it's all in the timing

Are you doing it for the scholarship or do you have a strong desire to serve. Not saying it is the case here but I get sense many applicants just want free education, preferably at the most expensive school.

I requested a state engineering university and really want to serve I come from a military family so I know exactly what I'm getting into.

No indication of a next board

Did your message indicate that you would meet the next board and be reviewed again? Usually this early in the process your application is reviewed again by the next board. Of course "usually" does not seem to apply to very much this year in regards to AFROTC, NROTC or DoDMERB.
Good Luck!

Unfortunately the message gave no indication of any future board. Hopefully it was just an oversight by the computer geek.

Pima, Thank you for your insights. It sounds like you served on the board sometime in the past. Just to clarify my scenario we have a 5pt weighted system for International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and AP courses. I took your advice and called my ALO/interviewer and he had no insight. Due to many employees being on leave he couldn't get any answers from Maxwell.

For all of you who got good news you are incredibly lucky!

My nurse option applicant kiddo checked and got the same 'not selected' message. Semi-disappointed, but not really with the situation this year. More angry than anything due to the fact that the app. process was so time consuming. The ALO will be shocked, thought our kiddo was a "shoo-in" for the nurse option scholarship. Kiddo already has 6 acceptances to schools and even into their nursing programs. I read the message and get the strong sense it is the end of the road in the AFROTC spin cycle. No rollover to another board like Navy or Army. Like you Shooter, our kiddo has awesome stats/EC's/ leadership/sports/AFA SS/military legacy. Makes you wonder doesn't it? Chin up Shooter, another door will open! :thumb:

DS received the following notice on his AROTC app:

"Your application met the board and you were not selected for a scholarship. However, based on your rank on the board, your application will be meeting the next board. You will be receiving written confirmation via mail within the next few weeks."

  1. Does this mean that his WCS is close to a scholarship, but that the board needs to reevaluate his position versus more candidates or some other criteria?
  2. Is it possible that his WCS places him between two different scholarships and that a decision will be made at the next board on which type of scholarship will be awarded?
  3. Do the boards tend to push out some candidates so that we may need to wait until the last board in April to hear if a scholarship will be awarded to DS?
Thanks.

We also found out today that my son's scholarship was a Type 7 one for AFROTC.....

However, he was called by his senator's office this afternoon and told he'd be getting his appointment to USNA (his #1 choice!) in a few days! Definitely a surprise and a great Christmas present! :thumb:

This is really critical advice that everyone (whether you are applying for an SA appointment, ROTC Scholarship or applying to college) should read and heed. THE BEST ANSWER is to go to the source when you have a specific question or concern. The Liaison Officers and Admissions Officers are there to give you specific guidance that CAN NOT be replicated by asking someone else who is in similar circumstance, and what you read on the internet - even on this forum can sometimes be dated and superceded by newer instructions and dates, or just plain wrong. CALL THEM and check on your application yourself- it will be worth the dime and the time.

ALO's and Maxwell are not your enemy or opposition.

They will be brutally honest with you and sometimes that sting makes it feel like they are against you.

THEY AREN'T! They are just giving you a real world answer.

Bruno is correct, what occurred last yr may not be what these boards are looking for this yr.

Their mission is from a long term strategic man power goal. It is about getting the best candidate to fulfill their objectives.

It is NOT PERSONAL, it is BUSINESS.

Shooter, I have never sat on any board, but after 20 yrs as an AF officer spouse(flier) and 3 yrs on this forum, you can start to see commonality from the outside regarding how the board system works.

Hindsight is 20/20. Read what people are saying...don't warp it into what you want to read/hear.

You are correct it will be skeleton crew until after Jan 1.

Did your ALO appeared shock when you told him this? Is he/she a new ALO?

At this point because you are a forum member I would go and pm Flieger (he is a mod here and an ALO regional). It doesn't matter that he is not your regional, what matters is he is the one that can give you better direction than any of us when it comes to the system. That is what you truly need now.

Good luck.

Remember it isn't over yet!
