I am currently a High School sophomore, about to be junior, and I am set on going to college on a ROTC scholarship. I have a 3.9 GPA, and I am yet to take either the ATC or SAT. Although I am sure that I would be able to pass the SAT and ACT requirements for the two tests, but my concern is elsewhere. Along with ROTC I would like to play football in college, I play offensive line so I am a big person, about 220 5 ft 10, and the ROTC scholarship has specific weight requirements for students. I know that these requirements are to ensure that the student is in prime physical shape, but I know that I am and will be in good shape because of my sport. So will I still be eligible for the scholarship, also what is it like balancing a sport and ROTC. Thanks!

Good on you for trying to balance both, but it's a lot harder than you might think. AFROTC requires around 5 hours a week of participation, but that's the bare minimum. Most spend about 7-10 hours per week on various ROTC related activities in order to receive a good commander's ranking. Also, summer activities (PDTs, LEAD, flight physicals, etc.) will take up a large portion of your summers as well. I go to a D1 school with a top ten athletic program and had two cadets do sports, one on the hockey team and one on the football team. Both had to drop their sports before junior year because they had to miss summer training camps and games during the school year for ROTC related activities. If you can manage to balance both, awesome, but be aware that it might be extremely challenging to do.

I would also add that you should think long term. What if you get injured in a game and become DQ for AF? Was it worth it to play football over serving in the AF?

I realize this question is for AFROTC but...
Army ROTC may still allow weight allowances while enrolled and playing a sport and position in college that requires extra 'weight'. The program used to be called RSCAP (ROTC Selected Cadet Athlete Program). Think football linemen, shot put, and internationally competitive sumo wrestler (lol, yes this has happened). It used to be in CCR 145-3 and requires approval above the battalion level and for the cadet to make height, weight, and APFT standards prior to commission. The considerations to your health identified by previous posters still exist.

Playing a sport and ROTC is great if you can balance all commitments (Academics, ROTC, Sport) and have great communication between the coach and military leadership. It will vary program to program.

Maybe one of the three AROTC Cadre that post here occasionally know if this program still exists. @MohawkArmyROTC @clarksonarmy
