Air Force ROTC Scholarships / Admissions - AMA

Is it too late to apply for a scholarship for Fall 2020? on the website it says 1/17/2020 deadline but does applying this late put my son at a disadvantage for consideration? Just starting to learn about the ROTC program as 2 acceptance letters to college that have ROTC programs came in.
Hello, it’s not too late. The only disadvantage is there are only 3 boards left, get the package in ASAP and good luck.

Son got reboarded, kinda sad that he now has to wait two months now but it's better than a rejection.

Deadline is Jan 17. You have no chance if you don't apply.

Son's application was completed in mid-December, and he has not been contacted for his interview yet. However, he just received a follow-up asking him to contact the "local" AFROTC unit, which is actually 270 miles away. That is not one of the schools he has applied to. Would he be allowed, instead, to contact his first-choice AFROTC unit, which is just 40 miles further away, and arrange for the interview there? If so, would it be in his interest to do so? I ask because this is a "recommended" practice re AROTC, but I don't know about AFROTC. Thanks in advance.

No. You are assigned to the closest AFROTC detachment who will reach out to schedule an interview. It does not matter that the school isn't on his list, it's just for interview purposes. If everyone tried to reach out to a school of their choice, it'd be hell logistically.

Hello - I've read in several places that it's worthwhile to bring up, during the interview, that one has prepped for the interview with officers or another detachment CO. Is this something that one interjects or is there a spot in the process when this can be eased into conversation? Many thanks.

Son was contacted by an officer at USAFA to schedule a phone interview for his ROTC scholarship application. We are several hundred miles away from the nearest AFROTC det. Is this SOP under the circumstances?

It's fair to say if you prepped for the interview, it'll show. There's no reason to explicitly state unless asked.

Good afternoon! I'm currently a Scholarships & Admissions Advisor for Air Force ROTC. If you have any questions, please let me know. I will not chance you even though I have the boards.
Yes! We are in NC. DS is doing his fitness test this Friday then he is done. He needs to schedule an interview, and he emailed a Major back yesterday about it and hasn’t heard back. The dead line is right around the corner. who else should he contact? Thanks!!!!

Once everything is uploaded, the local detachment will reach out to you to schedule an interview once the website notifies them that your DS is eligible. You do not need to contact anyone.

Thanks! It was getting close and a little nervous!!!

The numbers I have seen posted on this forum show that in FY 18 AFROTC HSSP interviewed 2,789 candidates and offered 2,279 scholarships (81.7% offer rate). For FY 19 it was posted that 2,534 scholarships were offered (no interview number, but I presume it was commensurate). Question is whether these type numbers are expected to hold this year, i.e. if you get an interview, your odds of SOME scholarship offer appear to be quite good, like in the 80% range? Or is there reason to think that the numbers will look materially different this year?

Yes, as stated previously, your chances are quite good. It varies year to year but it's about an 80% rate if you are ELIGIBLE. Plenty of people apply, but a lot are self eliminated. It really depends on how many eligible applicants we receive this year.

Everything else. I'm not saying it's 75% exact, there is an algorithm that is used but, it looks around 70-75%. Academics are a huge part, so 20% GPA/Tests and 5% or less goes into PFA. Keep in mind that extracurricular leadership activities are calculated as part of the interview.
How would the interview be scored like what is the rubric etc., what would be your opinion of a good interview, and how can I as a candidate get the feeling that the interview went well. I did mine and felt really confident about it but then I got the “not competitive enough re-board” and it’s been eating away at me lately. Oh and I don’t want to be asking too much but what would the algorithm or equation be and the passing score for it as well? I understand if you’re not able to disclose that information OPSEC is very important.

My DS is eligible. I have a couple of questions before he has his interview and we sign off on this if he is fortunate enough to have it offered to him:
1: if after His freshman year he decides it is not for him (doubtful, but to be clear) he can rescind the scholarship with what kind of penalties?
2: we would be great with a type 2 or 7. Our instate universities are not very expensive. His goal is to be a pilot, back up medical school (I am a nurse and feel I have given him some guidance in this area). He is going between picking a biology major, chem or computer science. Now, I know the tech majors are weighed more, but to be a pilot, you need a bachelors in anything really?? So our thoughts are not to slam him into a tech degree. Does not picking a tech degree really hurt his chances of a scholarship? By how much? I am not sure he wants to jump into aeronautical engineering at the get go. He is an amazing student/athlete. Would be successful in just about anything. Thoughts??

1. No penalty if he drops before entering sophomore year.
2. He should major in whatever he is passionate about. Having a tech degree doesn't add points to your application, it's just that most of our scholarships go to tech.
