Air Force ROTC Scholarships / Admissions - AMA

Advice sought regarding whether it's worth significantly delaying applying for the HSSP in order to raise the PFT composite score above 93 (run = 11:17/54.8 pts, waist = 30/20.0 pts, push-ups = 49/8.3 pts, sit-ups = 71 / 10.0 pts).

It's unlikely that the applicant will significantly improve his run during the next month or two, ie unlikely that he will improve his run score by more than a single point at most. Same for push-ups.

Is it better to move forward with this score and seek to get an interview ASAP, ie before the next board or two, rather than delay the interview in hopes of making a 1- or 2-point increase in the PFT score? Thanks!

PFA score isn't a big factor. You don't even need to pass it to get a scholarship, you just need to attempt it. 1-2 point increase won't do you much or any good.

Good afternoon! I'm currently a Scholarships & Admissions Advisor for Air Force ROTC. If you have any questions, please let me know. I will not chance you even though I have the boards.

The application process online seems fairly sparse. But the application has a section for required forms and documents to be uploaded. I have scoured the afrotc website but do not see the forms to fill out or upload.

DS is a point short on the ACT requirements. He is taking the SAT in October. Is he able to complete his app before the results are in for that test and submit now to get into the first board or does he have to wait to get SAT scores (>1240)?

You are unable to compete in a board if you are not eligible so he would need to await for the eligible scores.

When should AFROTC scholarship applicants expect to be notified of Board results? The last day of each Board, or some later date? Thank you for any insights.

Depends on when you applied. There are 7 boards total and the results are released:

Hi, my daughter is a strong academic and eligible applicant. She probably over prepared for her interview and she says nerves got the best of her and felt she ranked her interview. Typically she does well- so I thought maybe she exaggerated. She told me the interviewer told her he was going to ask her 10 questions. He asked her three, cut the interview short (45min total I think she was in there) and concluded by saying “I think we are done here”. My question is for a solid competitor package, third generation military, how much weight is the interview? I know they can’t retake it.

The interview is the most weight. Note 85% of eligible applicants receive scholarships, so your chances are good even if you are at the minimum because the interview holds about 75%.

Abdominal Circumference is not listed as a requirement on the AFROTC PFA form. Does it need to go on there somewhere? Without any AC points, DD is at 74.6 points, just under passing. Thank you!

No AC is needed. We will adjust the score accordingly, thus you will end up with 94.6.

Question about a Type 2 scholarship... My DD was awarded a Type 2 tech scholarship. If she was to attend an in-state school, it appears a Type 7 would be just as good. If she decides on an in-state University, is it possible to convert to a Type 7? It seems it would be just as beneficial or maybe better for her, and free up a Type 2 for someone who would actually benefit from it.

Two years ago, the AFROTC application allowed Type I scholarship recipients to choose any school with an AFROTC Program. This year, the application asks for a school preference list. Can you tell us how the rank list works and its purpose? If DD receives a Type I or II scholarship, will AFROTC select a school for her from the list, or can DD select any school from her list, or any school she gets accepted to with an AFROTC Program? Thank you!

Unfortunately, you can only convert a Type 7 to a 3 year Type 2, but not vice versa. Typically, Type 2 covers enough for full-instate tuition (not at every school).

The school preference list is for commanders only. If a commander sees that you are qualified and outstanding, he may want to award a commander's scholarship for that specific school. This has no effect on your Type I scholarship if awarded. You are still able to take that scholarship at your choice of college.

Can you explain that a little further. Are you saying that a commander from one of the schools on the preference list can step in and say that this applicant deserves a scholarship as opposed to the board awarding it? Or are commanders able to up a Type 2 to a Type 1 in order to attract the applicant to their school? I'm kind of curiou about the latter because my son was awarded a Type 2 but his top choice is an out of state public college, so the only way he's going there would be with a Type 1 (the school doesn't offer any supplemental scholarships for partial ROTC awards). Thanks.

Yes, essentially. Think of it as this: A student would interview at the closest Detachment, and the interviewer would give him/her an interview score. However - he/she has that school lower on his/her preference list, - but the interviewer sees that she/he's an outstanding person, and every Detachment commander has 1, Type 1 scholarship, to hand out. The commander in turn, could use that Commander's scholarship as an incentive for him/her to attend that school.

Another scenario would be if your student didn't have the school that he/she interviewed at on their preference list at all. The commander would share his interview ranking with the schools on the list to potentially have them award a Type 1 to the student.

So to answer your question specifically, yes - however, it would've been given/competed during the same board which means if your son was awarded a Type 2, he was already considered by the board as a potential Commander's scholarship recipient, but he didn't receive one for his top choice unfortunately.
