Air Force ROTC Scholarships / Admissions - AMA

Thank you very much for having a presence on these boards. It's very helpful.

Does AFROTC ever consider a school that is not currently listed? For example, Saint Anselm as a crosstown affiliate to Detachment 475 University of New Hampshire, which is 50 minutes away. But St. Francis College, which is 30 minutes away, is not. (I'm only using these schools as an example, not asking about them specifically.)

How do schools become crosstown affiliates? Is it student driven, school drive, AF driven, or a combination? Has there ever been a consideration for a student to work out the details ahead of enrolling and join a local Detachment, despite the school (they are interested in enrolling) not initially being on the crosstown affiliate list (for a Type 1 or 2 scholarship.)

Schools become crosstown via school and HQ approval. Typically, creating a crosstown agreement isn't necessarily difficult as creating a Det but the school needs to show value i.e HQ probably won't approve if we only have 1 or 2 students from that crosstown.

In complexity, there is an option to dual enroll and be a full time student at ex St Francis College and take AFROTC classes at the host university. There has been numerous cases as so, but if on scholarship it wouldn't be possible as we wouldn't allow that scholarship at a non-crosstown school. Consideration for one student? Most likely not.

Good afternoon! I'm currently a Scholarships & Admissions Advisor for Air Force ROTC. If you have any questions, please let me know. I will not chance you even though I have the boards.
Hello! I just posted a thread a moment ago asking about my chances at a Type 1 or Type 2 scholarship at two private colleges. If you could check that out and give me feedback, that would be much appreciated!

My DS was looking into AFROTC scholarships, and initiated an account and application online. It said the status was "being reviewed for 5 days", and then today it said his status is rejected with the reason being "checklist". I cannot find anything to explain what that might be related to or mean. Can you clarify what that might be about? I can't think of any reason he would be rejected from even applying. He has nothing unusual at all in his history or information. Regular Montana kid with good grades and never any behavior incidences ever. When he logs in, he can't get back to the application anymore to look at it even. Thanks.

Is he at least 17 years old?

How does that affect his application?

Applicants for HSSP must be between ages 17-27. Age shouldn't conflict with general admissions to AFROTC though.

Last names L-Z: 334-953-6072

The only thing that I can think of is age, or a mistake with some information that doesn't match up. Other than that, it's probably something technical but those are the best contact.

I will not give you any "chancing" but I will give you some information that will help. Your GPA should be adjusted to a 4.00 scale from 9-11th grade, UW so it shouldn't be above 4.00. You will need to figure that out. For Type 1 and 2 in the past, the average 9-11 UWGPA is around 3.8-3.9. Your SAT is a little below the average. We take a look at your AP course-load but we do not care about your score on the exam.

Participating in sports is good but it doesn't set you aside unless you have a noticeable leadership position and your run times are not important to us.

NHS is super common as well. Employment is good, but also common, especially when your jobs don't reflect leadership positions.

PT test isn't held as much weight, but shoot for the highest score. Type 7 can be converted to a three year Type 2.

My dd is applying for an AFROTC scholarship. We know you can not super score. She has submitted a 30 composite ACT with a 24 in math on that test. However, she took a subsequent test and scored a 28 in math, but a lower composite (which is why she chose to submit the test with a 30 composite). Since AFROTC does not super score, would it be worth it to also submit the ACT with the higher math individual score, but lower composite? Is the 26 a composite minimum or an individual subtest minimum, or both? She currently has a 97% in Calc 1 at an accredited state university (dual enrolled) as a HS senior.

We would only take the highest composite score.

The interview is the most weight. Note 85% of eligible applicants receive scholarships, so your chances are good even if you are at the minimum because the interview holds about 75%.
Just coming back to say she did get a Type 2 scholarship but in the meantime she got a much better ACT score - can she submit to be reconsidered for a type 1? Vanderbilt’s tuition is going to be difficult to cover outside of the Type 2 she got (AF will be taken at neighboring University of Tennessee).

Has she been accepted to Vanderbilt and received her merit package yet?
Our DS was a type 2 non-tech recipient. Every single college threw merit scholarship money at him.
I will say his safety and matches basically made it a free ride. His reaches merit made it a couple grand out of pocket, and that included R & B in the cost

If this is your 1st child doing an AFROTC scholarship, read the fine print on the merit and talk to the financial aid office at each college regarding how they disperse the merit
~ AFROTC type 2 states UP TO.
~~ If the merit from the school is up to X for tuition only, This is where why you need to talk to them. Let's say they will give you 15K in merit for tuition. Tuition is 25K. The school merit comes off 1st. AFROTC is left with 10K. Key words here for AFROTC UP TO. They will pay that remaining 10K, but will not cut you a check back for the 8K.
~~ Now if the merit says X amt total, than they can place it towards the R & B, and then the remainder towards tuition. What is left on that part for tuition, the AF will pay up to 18K. IE R &B is 15 K, they gave you 22K merit and tuition is still 25 K, which means 7 K of the school merit will roll over to your tuition, leaving the tuition balance at 18K, thus, it is a free ride.

One thing to also understand is that next yr the tuition will most likely rise, and will do so every yr until they graduate. However, AFROTC is not necessarily going to increase. It has been 18K for about a decade now. Even if you are able to cover now, think about 3 or 4 yrs from now. My DS entered college and it was 28K, he commissioned 4 yrs later and it was 41K that yr.
~ I wish I could say it was only for my DS, but it was true for all 3 of my kids regarding how much it jumped within 4 yrs. It was always 10% increase per yr.

@hberger87 There is no need to post the same question to multiple threads, especially when they are in the same forum

No, you are stuck with a Type 2.

So what determines one should be awarded type 1 or type 2?

Sat/Act
Gpa
EC
Physical fitness
Interview ( I understand this has most weightage)

Whoever has the highest composite score of the whole person concept in each board. There's no single factor that determines it.

My son was awarded a Commanders scholarship at his #2 school and quickly called back and said he would accept. But then just found out that school doesn't not offer his major and the crosstown school that does, will not offer room and board. He knows that some schools will offer match grant for room and board if he gets a type 1 scholarship. So my question is, if he verbally accepted the commanders scholarship, does that take him out of the running for a type 1 scholarship with the board?

Make sure you let the Commander know before he updates the board as a CS winner.
