Air Force school selection

I received a scholarship to my top three schools out of the 7 I selected through the Army Rotc. Does the Air Force board do the same or do they just award to one of the schools you select?

Air Force scholarships are not school specific. You are awarded by type. Both Type 1 and 2 can be used at any school. Type 7 must be at an in-state tuition rate.

Is this really the case? If so why the need to list 5 schools in order of preference?

I am thinking so schools know who may be considering them and can reach out. Apparently the detachments can see who is reaching out. My DD had a meeting Monday and the Col said he could see what schools had made contact with her.

Just to clarify unless something has changed.

Type 7 Scholarship: covers tuition equivalent to a public college or university's in-state tuition rate and a book allowance for four years. This scholarship can be converted to a three-year Type 2 scholarship at qualifying colleges and universities beginning in the fall of the student's sophomore year.

Recommend talking to each detachment you are interested in to see if any school provides room and board, or if non-in-state rate schools offer any first year support for Type 7 recipients. Also some schools will treat out of state students like in-state students. Last I checked WVU was one of these.

Lastly in year's past the top 14 or so schools also converted Type 7 or Type 2 to Type 1 scholarships. MIT, the ivys, a select few others. See if that still is in play if applicable. Borrowed list from a correspondence on this option, below:
Princeton UniversityMassachusetts Institute of Technology
Harvard UniversityYale University
Columbia UniversityStanford University
University of ChicagoUniversity of Pennsylvania
Duke UniversityNorthwestern University
Brown UniversityJohn Hopkins University
Rice UniversityUniversity of Notre Dame
Cornell UniversityVanderbilt University

See what your options are - hope that helps.

Good info, but technically, it was AFROTC that offered the bump to a Type 1 if accepted to the schools shown. It was just done last year. I haven't heard if AFROTC was offering it this year. As I recall the email from AFROTC came out in January of 2020.

Doesn't look like it was a one-off/one-time deal:

Remember, a Type 2 is a 3 yr with an $18k cap where a Type 7 is any in state school with full tuition. So, a person in Florida who earns a Type 7 and wants to attend Embry Riddle gets a hell of a deal ;)

at a PUBLIC institution...is ER public ir private?

Well s&*%, I stand corrected 😂 Sorry about that. Perhaps I should edit my post so I don’t look like an idiot ;) I’m only a mom
Never only a mom.
I think there is a conversion option to a three-year for private schools, but AFROTC scholarships generally stump me. I’m only a squid. 🦑🦑

Thanks, you know what I mean :) Thankfully for us my son received a 7 and took it to his number 1 choice. Now I’m dealing with my youngest and crossing fingers for NROTC scholarship. He’s already been accepted to his #1, so this would just be icing on the cake. It’s amazing how different the scholarship process is for AFROTC and NROTC.

So am I... DD had it explained thoroughly at the school she accepted and at an OOS public institution that had been her #1 before accepting the CS Type 1...so no worries!
