I admit I don't fly very often, so this question may have a very obvious answer:

When you book the first ticket for your midshipman/cadet to get to their SA in the summer, what do you pic as their return date?

Is this for report in day? and should you use SATO travel?

If you don't use the travel package offered by the SA, then you buy a one-way ticket.

Your cadet/midshipman will be issued travel orders with instructions to call SATO and book his flight using his assigned number/code.

The ticket will not cost him anything. However, if you wish to travel with him on the same flight, your ticket WILL NOT be paid for, the cost is your responsibility.

See, I knew I was missing something

Thank you for the quick and helpful responses.

Also, you are supposed to be able to book your flight with SATO at the same time and just have them put it on your charge card. I found this difficult to do (the representative my daughter got obviously didn't want to be bothered) and ended up just going on the airline's web page and booking my flight right after she got off the phone with SATO. We even sat next to each other for one leg of the trip. Other parents have told me that they were able to book their flights thru SATO - guess it depends on who you get.

My sons were to fly the same day but on different flights to COSprings for I-day (actually, the day before I-Day was Fly Day). We paid an extra $20 so they could fly together.

They flew from our local airport to Dallas where they had a layover of about 2 hours. When they got on the plane to CO, all but six of the ppl on the plane were incoming basics! They had a blast!

If you scheduled your reservations without going through SATO, will the Academies reimburse you?
Thank you!

Keep your receipts!!! ALWAYS KEEP THE RECEIPTS! That advice doesn't stop at the academy gates....you need to remember that for your career too.

At least for West Point - all travel reimbursements go to the cadet!
We drove our daughter (just a few hours) and she got a nice mileage reimbursement directly deposited into her checking account.

Even if you drive - keep track of mileage and tell son/daughter what it is - your cadet can put in for a reimbursement early in basic.

they only allow a certain amount to be reimbursed

OK, this is something I had never thought of. . . . If you drive your kid to report for I-day, they can be reimbursed something for the travel expense? Since she just mailed her acceptance a few days ago, I guess it is possible that this is one of the many things that might be included and explained in paperwork that will show up later. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

In your "Offer" package, there should be a sheet titled "TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION TO USAFA". In part b of section 2, "Additional Travel Guidelines", it states:
Should you decide to drive to the Academy, you will be entitled to a reimbursement allowance of $.27 per mile from the point you entered on your appointment form, in addition to an allowance of $109.00 per day for the allowable travel time. In order to receive to $.27 per mile, you must be the owner or operator of the vehicle. Maximum travel time is computed as one travel day for each 350 miles of the official distance. Reimbursement of parking fees, ferry fees, and road tolls is authorized for the direct route to the Academy.
However, the appointee is "highly encouraged to request a government furnished airline ticket from the Academy." Look in your daughter's Offer package, the info sheet I'm quoting has lots of other travel info/guidelines.
