All Female Submarines

I don't believe I've seen this posted elsewhere here. Apologize if I missed it.

The Navy plans to make two Virginia-class subs all female. Not a joke.

PLEASE, let us keep any discussion ON TOPIC and CIVIL. Thank you.

USNA1985, you suck! I was thinking that this was something really cool and that there might be more new opportunities for females in the Navy. I really fell hard! My bad.

If they really did do this it would be the best performing submarine in the Navy. Why you ask?

Because women, as a group weigh only 60 to 70 percent as much as the same group of men. Plus they eat less, so there would have to be less food storage.

Lighter submarine, better performance, right? Plus a lot of women are just better at fine control, so they'd have that going for them also.:thumb:

But then, this sub would also be easier to detect, since all the women would be talking so much, right?

Aww, terrible stereotype, I apologize profusely...:shake:

Cougar, Your post reminds me of an incident when I was stationed at a remote base where private vehicles were not allowed. The air station was about 12 miles from the ‘residence’ portion of the base and I would pull into at the bus stop each morning and load my pickup with sailors going to work. One morning, the young enlistee who was sitting up from struck up an immediate conversation. He mentioned that he saw me riding my bike a lot and we talked about the fact that it was good exercise. He then mentioned that back home he had ridden to school each day and that it was a particularly good workout since it was uphill all the way both ways. Thus began a quandary which endured the entire remainder of the trip. Should I point out the impossibility of such a statement and embarrass him? Or should I not say anything only to have him later realize the absurdity of his remark and marvel in the fact that I believed him?

A ship’s weight is referred to as it’s displacement for the amount of water it displaces. For a submarine to submerge, it’s weight (displacement) must be equal to or slightly greater than the amount of water it displaces. Therefore, all saved weight in crew and groceries must be compensated by taking on more ballast (water). Nice try, though.

we just covered that in physics last year- it's called Archimedes Principle.

Okay, you got me. My kids don't believe I had to walk four miles to school in 2 feet of snow, uphill both ways either.

Thanks for setting me straight.:thumb:

This thread makes me laugh a lot, particularly the last 50% of it. As a rule of thumb, if you have a comment - particularly one that is inflammatory at best or insensitive and obtuse at worst - keep it to yourself, because I've been seeing a lot of threads get destroyed by things like that and it is getting old. That's all. Funny April Fool's Day joke though... there was a Saturday Night Live sketch about the same thing a few years ago.

So, what you are saying is that the goal of the forum should be to make everyone feel good, not the dissemination of factual information?

I was referring specifically to the jokes about women earlier in the thread and a few other instances where people say little things that aren't particularly relevant and then the whole thread becomes about that comment instead of the original thought.

zachogden, you said earlier about an all women submarine crew:

I looked for this skit, but couldn't find it online...it is there a video of it somewhere? I would love to see it!

I'll look for it as well... it was a non-recurring sketch so it's making it a bit tricky to find. I'll let you know if I run across it!
