DS appears to have a shin splint. Is there anyway to take an alternative AROTC physical fitness test that doesn't require running?

Are you asking about "scholarship" CFA testing or in college ROTC APFT? Is he already "on scholarship" in college?

Yes, he is already is on scholarship. He is a sophomore. He plans to take his test in November to allow more healing. He was just wondering if there was an alternative way to meet the running requirement.

Not sure about AROTC.....supposedly they are moving to ACFT like the AD folks. No way around the run on that, but I would suppose a "light duty" or "profile" by a doctor on his leg would allow him to skip one ACFT or APFT without issue (just make sure the doc does not make a diagnosis that is disqualifying). That would give his leg time to recover and progress. I think most ROTC programs allow for two PFT failures before problems would arise.

His cadre sent him an email regarding a "profile."
He is making good progress and thinks he could pass it if he had to. I think he should just wait till November to take it the second time. Luckily, his physical therapy seems to be working.

I don’t think you need to worry. Just make sure he follows doctor’s orders and gets better.

During my DS’s sophomore year in college he fractured his pelvis, and his radius, plus he dislocated his shoulder (he was a snowboarding instructor during college). His battalion put him on profile and kicked him out of PT when he showed up on crutches. Three months later he not only passed the APFT, he also went back to snowboarding.

He is now an Army Armor 2LT about to deploy overseas.

FWIW... My daughter also has/had shin splints. We decided to invest in a nicer pair of running shoes and had her foot measured for a good custom insert to see if that would help. It did! She felt 100% better and has since been running fine.

As of today October 1st, the ACFT is now the official test of record. As far as I know, unless a cadet has failed an APFT September 30th or prior (90 days to retest) cadets attempting to validate scholarships or contracts are going to subject to a modified ACFT (This is coming from 6th brigade):
Hand release push-ups, leg tucks, 2-mile run.

With that being said the normal ACFT has three events to choose from that replace the run for those on profile:
1,500-meter bike ride
1,000-meter swim
5,000-meter row

I would have your cadet ask cadre about the possibilities of these events to replace the run.

I just took my first ACFT and did very well on all the events, except the leg tuck (6). I by no means very tall, but I found it difficult to not touch the ground due to the bar height. Does anyone have any tips for improving leg tucks?
