Am I competitive for a waiver? How would my case for a waiver work?

Hello!

I am applying to both the Air Force and Naval Academy and have been told by all of my interviewers (ALO, BGO, Nomination board) that I am a very competitive applicant. I have received 3 noms for USNA and 2 for USAFA. I have a good GPA and an above-average SAT score for the academies. I am a national competitor for USA Judo and USA Karate (these sports require a lot of conditioning), am the Cadet Commander for my entire AFJROTC Program, and was my AFJROTC's Physical fitness (Raider) commander in my junior year. However, I recently checked the weight requirements for the academies and I am about 7-9 pounds over my weight. I am 70 inches tall and weigh 200 pounds flat. However, I am not obese and have been told I have a lower than 18 percent body fat. I am extremely worried about my DoDMERB case because I have completed both exams (Physical and eye exam) on the 7th and the 14th of December; furthermore, my DoDMETS account says I am "Incomplete." How would the waiver process work for my case? Would I simply be allowed to reweigh myself if the academy deems me competitive? Or would there be a tape test? I am grateful for any input!

I can only share my DS’s experience last cycle. His waiver was finally approved late April. So be ready for the long… long wait. DS was offered the USNA Foundation Scholarship. He accepted. He was told that the waiver doctor only comes in once a week to process medical waivers. Eventually DS’s waiver was finally approved.

I your only issue is you don't fit the weight chart, I don't think that is a dodmerb DQ. At least for USMA, DS was fine with Dodmerb and passed no problem. USMA did ask him to get taped and have school nurse fill out a DOD form on body fat but that had nothing to do with dodmerb.

Yes. Weight is my only problem. I have had experiences with asthma however it was before the age of 13 and I have the medical records to back that up. I hope that my weight is not a problem!

When you're overweight, it all comes down to the tape.

That is true. And if you’re lucky enough, you’ll pass but if not you will be DQed until you reach the standards.
how many months did you wait? I just got DQ for astigmatism, but my paperwork was processed extremely quickly.

Wrong. Luck has nothing to do with it. Either your body fat is within standards or it isn’t. That is completely within your control.

A = If there are no medical comorbidities with your height/weight, DoDMERB does not DQ for this. Ht/Wt is purely administrative and is dealt with in Admissions. Each Academy has their own criteria for overweight processes:wiggle:

Very true! I will try my best to either make weight or make the tape test. I got this!

Thank you so much! That is a relief.
