Hello, I have been on the forum for a few months now but I haven’t made an introduction. I am a sophomore in high school from Los Angeles, California. My biggest goal is to join the United States Air Force Academy because I want to be surrounded by like-minded people who are all unique in different ways but have the same passion: to serve their country (and love aviation). But recently, I have been looking into USNA and have highly considered it as my second option.
I have loved planes, military and space technology, and STEM growing up because of my dad- an engineer at Northrop Grumman who has introduced me to this field at a young age. My grandpa was an engineer for General Dynamics and Boeing, and a military officer and war refugee who escaped the communists with his entire family in Vietnam has also inspired me. Pretty much an engineering family.
Although it’s highly difficult (due to the lack of spots available), I would like to try for a spot at medical school after the academy. A brainstormed goal is to become a military doctor, preferably a flight surgeon or flight nurse. I am inspired by my aunt and uncle who are both surgeons. But instead of civilians, I want to be a doctor mainly for military members or fighter pilots. However, being realistic, since medical school is a long shot due to the limited spots at the academy, my next favorite option is to become an intelligence officer!
Lastly, I love this country and our military members and I am thankful for finding this forum since it has helped me greatly in guiding me on the application process through people who have been there. I am hoping to use this forum throughout my journey on applying to a SA and beyond. Happy Good Friday!

Are you exploring the Navy and other service HPSP scholarships for medical and nursing school? The joint military medical school at USUHS? The Navy Nurse option in NROTC? If military healthcare is your goal, that’s how the Navy and other services get the majority of its healthcare providers.

Thank you very much! My goals of attending an academy is a little bit stronger than become a mil doctor, so unfortunately, I would have to be realistic about the medical field. But I will also be looking into the military medical programs as another alternate, because they are also very good options with great benefits!

Welcome to the Forums. I hope you are also considering your options beyond the academies if service is your goal.

I would say to one of my own

If its medical RN or MD that you really want then I’d not suggest a SA.

At a SA being a line officer——which I am not sure includes intel unless you are not cleared for unrestricted line—-should be the goal with medical school as a remote possibility. Not impossible but difficult.

Good Luck

But if serving in a line position for 5 years is not a deal breaker, with at least some chance of medical school right after graduation , then a SA makes a great option.

What I don’t know——how hard to get medical school right out of a SA vs getting medical school while serving on AD after your first 5 years on AD are over.
