"A short time back, a high school student contacted me and said he was interested in attending the USMMA, and asked if I could describe the place a little for him. Being a recent graduate, I certainly have a lot to say about it, and once I started writing I discovered just how much that was. My email to him eventually turned into a long letter, which I would like to share with you. I had a lot of questions myself before starting at Kings Point, and I think there are a lot of gray areas, especially regarding post-graduation careers, living aboard ships at sea, and life at school beyond freshman year which are not well addressed to prospective candidates. So, I tried to compress a comprehensive and informative overview of Kings Point and what it means to go there into a few pages. I hope you find it helpful."

Wow, thank you SO much for sharing that letter, Daniel. I'm printing it out for my son as we speak. He's sick with a fever - he's an Eagle Scout staffing at Boy Scout camp this summer, as a dining steward. Caught some bug there. They get to come home for one night a week so he's spending his day in bed! It will give him something to do while he's lying there. Anyway, thanks again. This was very informative!

As a parent it is very informative and helped understand what a Plebe will be going through.

Fantastic overview. I think KP is one of the great secret gems in America. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing! My husband, DS and I found it quite informative. One question we have is how Sea Year affects athletes involved in winter sports.

sea year works around sports. If sports run over into the time of the athlete's sea year split, they hold over until the athletic season is complete.

I think the letter could have elaborated a bit more on the great "shore side"/industry opportunities that are available to USMMA grads. Perhaps a bit more on grad school too. I found that being a USMMA grad was attractive to many of the grad schools I applied to ... although this cuts both ways, i.e. you're likely to have a lower GPA (especially engineers) at KP than most other colleges given the rigor of the program. However even this isn't necessarily a showstopper. I have classmates who graduated toward the bottom of the class but were later accepted at the Ivies and other great schools (and did quite well).

Other than the above, great letter vortexkp99.

All, to all who are prescribing this letter to me, please stop. I had NO part in drafting it. I merely reposted it from the indicated website. Please thank the KP 09 graduate indicated by the quote.

Your first post was misleading then, because nowhere in it did you say it wasn't you who wrote it.

Yes but for all I know Mr. Daniel's could be vortex. We were all just complimenting him on the letter so no harm done there but really, it wasn't clear. I thought the letter was extremely helpful and I'm glad he shared it.

This is the single best piece of information I've read about King's Point. I am printing it off and sharing it with one of the students I coach - KP could be the perfect fit for him. Thank you both, Daniel AND Vortex!!

This is such an awesome Open Letter that I challenge anyone in Class of 2025 to post and get it up to the top of the threads again next year! I downloaded the letter circa 2017 and it appears the original link is not working. Here it is again! Enjoy!

I was surfing this forum and found this open letter by accident.
This is one of the best info summarizing everything about a service academy, e.g., USMMA. What a great info from a KP graduate!

I can feel his leadership and passion for his job as a KP alumnus.
