And now we wait...

Class Rank

As far as academic evaluation goes, class rank does not matter as much. I think it is a combination of grades and SAT/ACT scores. I recommend sending in his grades from his freshman and sophomore year.

All his grades, from both schools, are on his transcript. I emailed my DS's AO to make sure that they were aware of the school policy.

I am so happy for those who have been accepted but my son will be joining the rest of you on the wait list. While we certainly respect that a lot goes into these decisions, we admit to being somewhat baffled. SAT: 2330; ACT: 34; 4.0 unweighted GPA with 9 AP classes; first or second in a class of 125; 4 year, 3 season varsity athlete; tons of service/volunteer/leadership both in and out of school; National Merit Semifinalist; full tuition scholarships to six schools so far. I could go on...again, very happy for those accepted. Disappointed for my son. I guess we join the waiting game now.

Wow maine~er. If he was wait listed I have no chance! Did he apply to other service academies? I have several scholarships available as well. I am going to have to pick a college and my parents are going to put a deposit down to hold my spot.

Kansaskid1: He has received an LOA for USMMA (the only other SA to which he applied) but CGA has been his first choice since middle school and was further reinforced when he attended AIM this summer. It just shows, we really have no idea what they are looking for at any given time. We are grateful that he has other excellent opportunities available to him as I'm sure all wait listed applicants do. Good luck to you!

Still Hopefull

DS was wait listed. :roll eyes: More waiting. But, happy that there is still a shot. The Coast Guard is DS's first choice.

Don't give up Kansas kid, but do move forward with plan B. Everyone that applied had good test scores and good standing, or they wouldn't be on the wait list. I had a nice email from the AO and he confided that he was chosen off the wait list himself and he thought that my son had a good shot. They are looking to build a well balanced class. So, if you play a sport that needs you or play an instrument they need you could get chosen over someone with just grades.

Musicians

I have seen it mentioned a few times that playing a certain instrument which may be needed can help an applicant, but my son was told that this is not the case. Has anyone heard about being "recruited" for an instrument? Would that information be taken directly from the application by the admissions office if they are interested in a certain instrument, without directly contacting the candidate about it? My son is on the waitlist. Thanks.

My two cents with a bit of perspective...youngest son attended AIM before his senior year in high school, he had a tremendous week, thought he impressed and scored real well...the cadre told him to follow through and apply which he did...distinguished honors all through high school, two varsity sports, volunteer hours up the kazoo...he went EA and found out Xmas eve last year he was to be denied admissions for the class of 2018...it was a brutal day....the USCGA missed out on an tremendous plebe...he just got his grades from Massachusetts Maritime and went 5 for 5 with "A's"...we are thrilled and prouder than ever...he worked his tail off along with running XC for the Buccaneers....who knows what he would have done at the CGA but he was never afforded that opportunity...their loss because you can't measure heart, desire, work ethic and determination on an application...he sails on sea term this January and will graduate top of his class with a CG license as a Marine Engineer in three more quick years...he had recommendations from ex commanders from the Coast Guard but his fate was not to be New London...he held his head high
Merry Christmas to all those waiting, sleep tight...there are many wide doors that will open if the CGA window gets shut...

Thank you Sweetpea704. I am not going to give up, but will move forward with my plan B as you suggest. I was accepted to Boston College today and that raised my spirits and confidence.

Admission to the USCGA is not something I can control, so I am going to stop feeling sad about it and enjoy Christmas.

DD also wait listed which was a surprise as she's a great candidate and enjoyed AIM. She has NROTC 4yr scholarship in place and waiting to hear from the USNA and a few more colleges before she makes her final decision so not sure she will stay on WL at USCGA. Disappointed.
