Hey all,

I was curious if it is possible to be in both the ANG and ROTC at the same time? If so, what are the benefits and drawbacks?

With Army ROTC, you can do both. This is the the SMP program. You would have to enlist in the National Guard, complete basic training and AIT. Then, once you successfully complete both trainings, you could contract as a cadet with an ROTC unit at a college or university that you attend. From what I have heard, contracted cadets receive monthly Drill pay for attending the ANG weekend drill, ROTC monthly stipend for being a contracted cadet, GI Bill from the enlistment contract. My recommendation is to talk to an ANG recruiter to verify my information. This is different than being a scholarship cadet. You would not have to attend AROTC Basic Camp since you have attended basic training and AIT.

Be sure to talk to an AROTC Recruiting Officer at some unit as well. They know the ins and outs. This program can be tricky and if for some reason you don't contract with ROTC, you're still enlisted and have an obligation.

Go in with your eyes wide open so you accomplish your goals.

There are ROTC scholarships available thru the guard but they lock you into the guard upon graduating. If you go as a “non-scholarship SMP” you can still compete for active duty. Lots of folks change their mind during ROTC and can’t go active like they now want to.

also ask if the university offers some sort of deal for National guard soldiers. Many state schools do.

Thanks, I will look into it.
