Another career bites the dust due to stupidity

The thick-skinned part of me wants to say, "He said he was going to offend people, so be prepared or tune out."

The realistic part of me knows that just doesn't happen. You can't do that kind of stuff with a wide audience. The XO can't be doing that either...VERY poor "standard" to set behavior-wise.

If he had kept those jokes to a private group of peers/near-peers, that's different, but he literally broadcast it to anyone on the ship...:thumbdown:

I don't have a problem debating the validity of each other's opinions- I do have a problem with insulting each other. This needs to stay respectful and not immediately turn into a food fight.

+1 agreed

I am really not upset by the contents of the videos. Mostly harmless. Even Corinne Reilly, the Ledger-Star reporter who broke the story, stated in an interview that she really saw nothing wrong with the videos, it was the seniority and position of the person who delivered them with which she had issues. Remember, these happened every Saturday night for sixteen or so months. The clips you are seeing is only someone’s idea of the very raunchiest.

From my previous posts, I forgot to mention that the back-to-back extended deployments during which this is reported to have happened was in support of our efforts in the Indian Ocean, weeks and months of continuous operations in very hot conditions. Hardly the time or place for teamwork building morale exercises.

After, between facebook and a few other sources, reading literally thousands of reader comments, a few things begin to emerge. He was a fair and competent leader. The troops, especially the enlisted, looked forward to these Saturday night episodes. Those who have been deployed under extreme conditions for extended periods understand the morale issues and how these videos can be productive and are in support of the skippper. Those most critical, for most part have never been on a ship or even served.

Captain Honors is a well-liked and respected skipper. He has been instrumental in getting the oldest ship in the Navy operationally ready for an extended deployment in the Mid-East. Both the Airwing and the ship have set several records during workups in preparation for this deployment. If Capt Honors is relieved, it will do irreversible damage to the well being of the crew and the ability to accomplish it’s mission. His superiors realize this. One or two with a little backbone and he may retain his command.

I can't believe this!!!! I have not read past this response and I just have to ask Mongo: So, it's OK for this....what was it you called him....ummmm "fair and competent leader" to used a homophobic slur on the video, and maybe one of his superiors with a little backbone will realize he was only trying to cheer up a few young sailors serving on a real hot ship? Yet General Amos has people on the ground actually fighting (and BTW, no, I'm not saying the sailors are not patriotic lol....) and he wanted his troops votes to be heard, and yet he's toast in your eyes for being an old guard "out of touch" Marine?

Now I've heard everything here!

Sure makes a floating city sound like a real small boat and sailors living in such discomfort..... :rolleyes:

Just wondering if anyone who has posted on this thread has ever watched Saturday Night Live and understand parody or satire???

All that will happen is a new commander will be put in charge. It is not going to stop a deployment, especially if they have a few weeks still left before leaving.
I dunno. This was discussed on CNN tonight and the general consensus was that it will be very difficult for the Navy to find a Skipper for the Enterprise immediately.
My understanding is that specific deployment dates are not made public - but what if it has been scheduled to depart today? This week?

This does have the potential to cause at least a timing problem. At what point do we put the war on hold?

In further developments, Capt Honors has been temporarily relieved. The investigation is also looking into the Capt and Admirals during the 2006 & 2007 deployments and why they allowed production to go forth.

If that ship was scheduled to deploy it'll deploy on time. The war doesn't get put on hold and there is no Captain, Colonel etc who is indispensible. Army and Marine Battalion and Brigade Commanders get relieved in contact, someone else steps in and things drive on. The Navy will do the same and the only thing different will be the name on the CO's coffee mug. They have an XO, plenty of O6's screened for command and a plan to replace the Captain if he had been physically incapacitated while the ship was in theater. So a Carrier sitting in Norfolk ought to be able to have a relief and continue to function.
When Gen McChrystal got relieved I don't believe there was a stand down in Afghanistan and I sure don't remember anyone suggesting that there would or should be one.

It will indeed be difficult to find another CO on such short notice. More than likely, it will have to be a previous carrier skipper. And those guys are not just sitting around waiting for another CO to be relieved. The list of eligible Captains is very small. Previous deep draft qualified CO, carrier aviator, nuclear power qualified.

Navy to relieve officer during inquiry over lewd videos

NBC News and news services

NORFOLK, Va. — The Navy officer who aired lewd videos for crew of an aircraft carrier will be temporarily relieved of his command as early as Tuesday, Navy sources told NBC News on Monday.

Capt. Owen Honors commands the USS Enterprise and produced the videos while second in command aboard the aircraft carrier.

He is to be relieved while the Navy investigates the incident.

Made in 2006 and 2007, the videos just came to light over the weekend and show the crew got an eyeful on shipboard TV: Gay slurs, suggestive shower scenes and mimicked masturbation.

The Navy said Sunday it will investigate the "clearly inappropriate" videos shown through the nuclear-powered ship's closed-circuit television system as part of an onboard movie night.

As of this morning, the two facebook pages calling for the support of Capt Honors now has over 10,000 friends/likes. Most are Navy members of all rates and ranks who most assuredly understand the reasons for the videos and many are those who have served with him in Enterprise, including many females and probably a few gays.

Again, my estimation is that there were probably a total of over 20 hours of video. The few minutes of questionable snippets which you are seeing is easy to take totally out of context.

Quick, someone call the White House and let them know that two groups of supporters for the stupid actions of a Navy captain have surfaced on Facebook.

Also, please let the White House know that a significant number of people on FaceBook like a pickle over the Canadian band Nickelback! :eek:

Sound like it's more difficult to replace an Aircraft Carrier CO than it is electing a US President?

The United States Navy says the videos are "clearly inappropriate."

Who decides his fate - facebook or the USN?

And yet General Amos has 200,000 people under him, and he gave his "asked for expert opinion/report" on what 70% of those 200,000 plus subordinates wanted, and was chastised? Where are the "Saturday Night Live" skits on the Captain? I seem to remember the General was mocked there also? I could be wrong??? Maybe Stewart?? lol

Hmmmm, not making sense...

It would be impossible for ADM Roughhead to continue on with his implementing sensitivity training for homophobic sailors with this CO out there.

At this point, I think the CNO needs to hold the old Captain responsible since it was on his watch, what did he know and when did he know it? lol But seriously, his job should be on the line for allowing such leadership on his "Floating City" Hmmmm, low moral?

I'm guessing whomever that Captain, now RADM is, he'll cave like a house of cards watching Honor (btw great name for him...) fired.

I'm sure this will be swept under the rug neatly, never to heard about again in the next 3 or 4 news cycles. Unless the Navy goes against their usual "protect their own" decorum and outs this guy as a homophobe, where the media will gladly pick it up and use it in their latest triumph of the repeal of DADT. It's going to be interesting to see how this shakes out.

Who decides his fate - facebook or the USN?

How many of these facebook supporters actually served with him or do him directly as a USN officer?

On GMA this a.m. Wesley Clark was being interviewed regarding this issue, and he even alluded very strongly that there will be more fall out.

1. The younger officers are now going to be interviewed.

~~~Hmm, let's see do they sacrifice their career for him, or do they sell him out?
2. The leadership will now be reviewed to see if they did indeed reprimand him for these videos or did they turn a blind eye to this?
3. He was a leader in power and he should have always been thoughtful of how every sailor would perceive this video. His job is to protect everyone that is under his command...that includes the gutless, fags and women he offended.
4. This could be the "tailhook" of the 21st century and careers will fall.
Clark did defend him by saying it is a high stress environment, but that is about as far as his defense went.
Just wondering if anyone who has posted on this thread has ever watched Saturday Night Live and understand parody or satire???
JAM, everyone has seen SNL, but tell me, in the corporate world for all of us who watch SNL, do any of them write your OPR or PRF? Does anyone of us have to report to these characters/people in a war time environment? Imagine being that 26 yo closeted gay O3 member and your lifestyle is being attacked by the person who decides if you get to go to TPS. Imagine being the female enlisted member and the talk on the ship is about the shower seen.
Where is their escape? How comfortable as a woman would you feel?
In the corporate world he would be a SR VP for a company like IBM. Tell me, if he did that would he still have a job the next day? No, he wouldn't! Why not, because it is harassment.
You have a DD, how would you feel if she was offended by it, but because of the good old boy system she knew that if she spoke up her career would be in jeopardy...afterall, he knew as a leader people were complaining and instead of ending this, he called them gutless to 5K people. Would you still defend his actions if she was one of those "gutless" people.
You support the repeal of DADT, how can you support him when he insults homosexual lifestyle.
He created an environment of fear...it is either you are with me or against me in these videos.
Honors is not going to be the only one to lose their career, there will be more fall out because now this is a national story on every network, craniums will roll. Welcome to Tailhook 2011
Max,
I disagree. I think because he offended homosexuals and women the media has found a story to hook their teeth into.
I bet every news network is trying to put names to every face in those videos and they will go to the DOD asking about these people who took part in the skits.
They are going to go and find the anonymous sources in the Pilot and and try to find someone/anyone to go on record. It won't be hard because not everyone on that ship in 06/07 are still in the Navy so they will not have the fear like those who are still AD. There will be people who want their 15 minutes of fame willing to dish dirt about how the other side felt.
Additionally, because the new Congress is not in yet, it is a slow news cycle which means they will keep on this.
If anyone remembers Tailhook, it started off like this, a small story, it gained steam and it became a national story very quickly all because one person talked about the antics they saw 1st hand. From there others came out and some to save their career gave up freely the names of others.
The problem for the Navy is that the media is already equating this to Tailhook. This comparison now brings another twist to the story that the media can and will bite off on...did the Navy really change at all after Tailhook?
