Another Important Matter Concerning the Existence of Humanity- Coffee

I am going to be a serious audience at this Important Matter thread, because I don’t drink coffee, never liked the smell or taste. It wasn’t until years later I realized why. When I was 4, I woke up in the night and smelled something bad and walked toward the kitchen, which was on fire. My parents had a big electric percolator coffee pot and one of those timer things, which must have gone bad, according to the firefighters. I ran and woke my parents, scared silly. The kitchen was burned up, house was saved. I realized I associated a burned coffee smell with that incident.

So - I shall enjoy but have zip to add. I’ll sip my silver tips white tea whilst observing.

DH’s current favorite, Peet’s Big Bang.
Thank God it wasn't a grease fire that started while Mom was frying up some bacon!!! :D

I also like Cafe Bustelo
OMG that's my coffee of choice in the espresso pot. Been a while since I made espresso, although that used to be my regular morning beverage. I'll have to dig that pot out. As a rule I only brew Dunkin' Original Blend for it's smoothness in my drip pot. My old stomach can't handle acidic coffee anymore. The drip pot only gets rinsed. Who wants their coffee tasting like soap? Coffee must always be served with half and half in my book, which makes me a proud foo-foo drinker.

My southern heritage wife doesn't drink coffee, only tea. That should have been my first clue... :D
Love her just the same though.

Sorry, but I am perfectly fine with Kirkland Columbian in the 3 lb can for $8.99...

My palate isn't discerning enough to require the fancy stuff.
Consider yourself fortunate at that stage. You might not be a true addict yet. It can get pretty bad.

Spent my youth in the UK (air force brat). Tea...now there's a thread we could go with...

Coffee? Uh...was told at the academy"Oh, before you graduate it'll be your lifeblood." Nope. In pilot training"this will keep you alive with the early missions, the late missions, the constant stand-bye to stand-bye..." Uh, sorry...no.

To this day, can't stand the smell or taste.

Now...Earl Gray, a good Darjeeling, or...

But I'm not here to hijack the thread! For most of my friends and colleagues...coffee is essential to life!

Oh...to give some positive input (maybe) DW is a coffee drinker and has tried all the "big names" and has decided that McDonald's "normal cup" is just fine!

Grew up in England and I never met anyone who drank Earl Gray. Tastes like soap to me! Typhoo or PG Tips always, which I’m fortunate enough to be able to find in an upscale local grocery store. Basic black tea but SO much more flavor than Liptons.

Try Mark T. Wendell in Boston for some unique teas.

And if you are REALLY adventurous...they have the actual blend that was tossed into Boston Harbor in 1773...it's called, appropriately, "Boston Tea Party Tea." It's a strong black tea.

As a former owner of a coffee-roasting business, I have some opinion on this...

Throw the Keurig out or make a paper weight out of it. If you don't have the time or desire for a french press and only want to make one cup at a time, get the Toddy system. I've been making my morning coffee from my home-made cold brew every morning for 20 years.

I took my work cup home over the summer and it somehow ended up in the dishwasher. It is just now getting its healthy color back.

. Truly impressive ... a long Navy career without Coffee !

At the risk of hijacking (my own !) thread, you reminded me of my kitchen fire story. Was mid 70's, I was a teenager, melting paraffin on the stove to make fire starters for a Scout trip. There is a reason the package says to use a double boiler ! Anyway, the pan of molten paraffin ignited and my mother panicked (while I was looking for a fire extinguisher, as a good Scout I knew a little about fires !), and threw a big pan of water on the paraffin, causing a huge flare up and splattering molten paraffin everywhere. Fire went out, but the entire kitchen had paraffin residue and smoke damage. Guess who spent the next weekend cleaning and repainting the kitchen instead of going Camping ? (Hint, it wasn't my mother who caused the flare up!)

Now back to my coffee ! Thanks for all the recommendations, but I will stick with my Keurig ..for me, expediency is more important than flavor !

I note that thus far, no one has commented on the God-awful instant coffee found in MRE's. (although I admit, I was getting mine in C-rations rather than those new fangled MRE's. Taste was not nearly as important as the dose of caffeine. Still... adding it to a hot chocolate package made it much more tolerable.

OMG do they still make instant coffee... other than that in MREs?

I took Starbucks Via instant coffee (Italian roast is the best) to Philmont Scout Ranch a few years ago. It makes a stellar cup of coffee on the trail.

Instant coffee has been around since the 1700's, but we can thank the G.I.s returning from both WWI and WWII for the resurgence in the USA. Instant coffee came about (in widespread use in the U.S.) primarily because of G.I.s returning from both of those wars. That's all that they were used to (even though it was awful) and they developed a taste for it. When they got Stateside, they didn't like the taste of percolated, fresh-brewed coffee. The truth is often stranger than fiction.

You can throw a little instant into many baking recipes that could use a little extra flavor, like brownies or cookies, and hot chocolate is another place it shines. But I'd never put it in a cup with hot water.
