For the shorts that we wear to the classes, do they have to be khaki? I didn't think the list specified but in most of the pictures I've seen everyone has on khakis. Also, does it matter what shoe you wear with them (sounds stupid, but not all shorts go with athletic shoes!)? And any other not civilian clothing advice you have would be appreciated!

Last year we were only allowed to wear the blue USNA shorts they issued us, classes included. In fact, we were only allowed to wear the issued clothing the whole time. However, I would bring at least some civilian clothing just in case that changed. Good luck!

So now my mom is getting involved and she wants me to bring everything. Is it necessary to bring a fan?

How strict are they with shorts, Do they have to be a certain length?
For girls: its "that time of month" :frown: is that going to be an issue at all?
Finally, does anyone know what percentage of those who attend NASS and apply to the academy actually get appointed?

Any other tips/comments would be greatly appreciated! I'm flying out from Los Angeles and I am thoroughly excited to do this program :]

I thought the fan was definitely a good item to bring. The rooms are even more humid than it is outside, and you'll learn that it's impossible to dry any clothing you have with the air alone. The fan can be used as a way to dry yourself and your clothing, especially after the mock Sea Trials. Trust me, your mom will not be very happy to find wet clothing in your suitcase, no matter how hard you worked to dirty and wet that clothing.

To address the "time of the month" issue: You'll have time to do what you need to do, especially during the workshops. The professors are extremely nice and will happily tell you where to find a bathroom, even during the middle of the activity (from personal experience from hydrating). The only suggestion I really have is to pack something in your towel roll for the mock Sea Trials. You won't really have time to go to the bathroom during those six hours other than when you change into your bathing suit for the swimming evolution because you're always on the go that day. So again, just stick something in your towel roll, bring a rubber band or something to hold the towel, your bathing suit, and feminine product in, and you'll be good to go! :thumb:

Oh, and a large majority of my platoon applied to USNA or another service academy, and most of them got in. Out of my squad, including myself 5/7 got an appt. and one other got an appt. to USAFA.

If you guys have any more questions, feel free to shoot me a PM.

GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!

You don't have to worry about packing shorts or t-shirts. When you arrive on the Yard, your squad leader will give you a large bag filled with shorts, t-shirts, a water bottle, a folder for classess, and a small back pack. You will be required to wear the clothes they give you, and won't end up using any of your shorts anyway. The only time you will be wearing your "civilian" clothes will be at night to sleep in, or to arrive/depart the academy. Don't worry about packing khakis.

do you know if the shorts they give us have pockets? I'm really not sure what I would be carrying around, maybe my phone and camera because I kind of feel that I would want to take pictures when I could.

i don't think so... I know what you mean... I'm flying in and I don't want to pack TOO much because I know I'm going to come home with way more than I left with.

I was under the impression that the rooms had A/C, so wouldn't that zap away the humidity?

Last year everyone was given the same style of shorts except that some had pockets and some did not. However, almost everyone carried around the backpack during the classes so you can put stuff in that.

I don't want to pack a pillow - do they have pillows there?
There were none last year...

Have fun!

My son said he didn't wear a thing he brought last year, the NASS shorts and they rotated the 3 or 4 color tee shirts they gave them. The fan was needed, no AC in the rooms and you need a pillow unless you want to sleep with a towel or something as a pillow.
As to how many get appointments, it's a hot topic here and there will be a seminar at the end of NASS that my wife and I attended, they told us then (NASS Session 1 2008) that roughly half of the kids there would be offered Appointments. Last year there were 750 per session times 3 equals 2,250 divided by 2 equals 1,125 so that number doesn't work. I think the prior year the attendance was limited to only 600 per session and that might be more in line at about 900 offers from the NASS class. Remember, not all offered Appointments take the offer.

My son was DQ'ed with a color vision problem and is headed to West Point Prep this summer.

can anyone explain what goes on in mock sea trials? I have no idea whats going to happen and what day would sea trials be?

Sea trials are a series of mental and physical challenges given to plebes around the academy. They only do a "mock" sea trials at NASS and it's focal event is usually the rubber raft event where they all get wet. It's all dictated by the weather too, some may have outdoor events and others may not.
Half way through this youtube you can see some of the NASS Session 1 Sea Trials. I saw the lady that photographed this whole week of her son and my son was in a couple of the pictures.

They will not give you pillows; you could always buy a small, travel-sized pillow.

As someone said previously, you are given a bag on your first day. Included, is a mini backpack that you can put things in. I know I never really got any opportunities to take pictures because I was too busy taking everything in and talking to people.

The A/C didn't really work in my room, but even with it, it doesn't necessarily mean the humidity will be zapped away.

"Mini Sea Trials" were held on the last full day (Wednesday) during NASS 2007

At the closing briefing that year, they said that roughly 40% of those in attendance were likely to be there for I-day 2008. I don't know how that translated into actual appointments.

Mock Sea Trials are on the last day. You will get into the Severn. That is the day to wear the shoes and socks that you don't mind leaving behind. They will be very wet and dirty. There won't be time for them to air out. Not sure that would help anyway. Sea trials and mock indoc were our son's highlight of NASS. His squad leader took lots of pictures and made a disc for us.

Khaki's are a must

Just wanted to post for the students who are week 2 and 3 attendees. My daughter is at the academy this week, and even though Khaki's were not on the list of required clothing...they were all expected to have a pair. She did not have a pair and is being allowed to wear a pair of jean capri's for those times of the day, but she says it is a bit uncomfortable.

my packet did say that i needed to bring khaki shorts, in the paragraph above the list. BUt everyone said we didnt need them so thanks for the heads up
