Any appointments yet?

DS just got notified today for appointment to CGAS (recruited athlete). Not adding further information since it’s for CGA appointments. But, just want to let everyone know applications are being reviewed and decisions being made at the Academy. We applied EA in August.

DD just received her appointment to the class of 2027 via Track Coach. USCGA has been DD's first choice since last year, however, in October USMA track coach asked DD to run for them and DD received a Nomination a couple of weeks ago and submitted an application to West Point.

Btw, this year the Coast Guard will offer under 350 appointments to get incoming class of 290 cadets. Apparently this will be one of their most selective years in USCGA history.
I think 290 is still a pretty big class. Last year they started around 302 I believe, and I believe class of 2025 was around 290 as well.

Class of 2024 is very small, and it is actually a bit of a problem from what I've heard. They only had 265 at the start of swab summer plus 7 international cadets for a total of 272 to begin. Class of 2024 is now down to ~225 cadets. It was a bit of an issue this past summer when that class was cadre for a very large class of 2026, and it continues to make it more difficult for all of the 2024 cadets since each one is responsible for a larger number of underclass. I think they have just gotten used to it at this point. Next year they will be leaders for 3 classes that are much larger than them.

Admissions is a dynamic process. The number of offers will depend on the yield (acceptance rate), not the amount of applicants. They have some prior data, and they know how many are in process and completing CGAS 22-23 who will be eligible to be admitted for the class. As cadets accept, they fill available class seats and check certain boxes ie: sports, class major needed in the fleet, etc. Usually to round out the class there are several bunches of acceptances from the wait list in May. This enables the USCGA to meet its mission to provide the correct mix of fleet ready Ensigns to meet the projected end strength of USCG four years from their admission. Much of this is dictated by platforms to staff, ie: air assets and ships since most first billets are afloat.

They know there will be some cadets reporting that don't pass the day-1 weigh in for example or the color vision test and will be sent home in week one. They also know some will DOR (drop on request) over Swab summer. Others will fail academics the first year, and a few more will decide not to re-commit at the two year mark. Some will be disenrolled for conduct and honor issues along the way. It is a journey for sure.

The good news for the people hoping for admissions, is there is still a lot of time left and it's not over until its over and they announce they have seated a class and are done pulling from the wait list sometime in May 2023 or so.

Good points about the very real effect Covid and other factors had on the class of 2024, it is historically small. Small classes have more leadership opportunities so though small, they will be more "seasoned" by graduation.

Someone else asked this and I didn't see an answer. Over this last week, will contacts be made during the week or will everything come out on Friday? Thanks.

If you look at previous years there are still a trickle of decisions made all week long but for sure an answer to one of the four decisions on it before Friday (CGAS, deferred to RA, Admitted or denied).
Peace to you on this hard season of waiting!

Anyone know if good news (Appointment, CGAS) is ever received without a phone call? Or does no phone call automatically mean deferred or denied?
