Does anyone know which day in March we should expect to hear from the Academy in regards to appointments? I most likely will not get an early appointment, just wondering if there is a date scheduled for the final review board...the waiting is getting to me haha!

Thanks!

PS- I do have a nomination already.

You ask the million dollar question. I believe that the early ones are given first because of the "No Brainer" factor. Then they finish up the LOA's. "No Brainer - Part Deux". Then after that, they wait until ALL applications are completed by the cutoff date and finish the scoring and such. Then, they go with the "Principle Nominations". Remember; there are those that if they get the principle nomination, they are pretty much guaranteed. They also finish up some of the OTHER categories. E.g. presidential, vp, ROTC, Prior Enlisted, etc... Then they figure out how many slots are left. They start at the top of the list with the highest overall scores and pretty much offer whatever is left. Then, because there will be quite a few who decline, they will offer more. This will go on most of March and into April. Then, as more decline, more will be offered. This can go on all the way up until June. It definitely sucks; especially if you are sitting there with multiple acceptances and they are also wanting a reply. Let alone getting deposits down for the dorm and such. later... mike....

You could ask your Rep's office. Some representatives however don't have a PRINCIPLE. If they did, that person gets the slot. However, some reps prefer to let the academy do the choosing. The academy HAS to take a person on the list, but the representative is letting them do it. Some reps say which nomination is their principle. Best thing to do is to ask. later...mike...

i'm not really sure. what exactly do you mean by principle nomination?

Long answer made short: Each representative is allowed 1 "Automatic" appointment. (For lack of a better term). If you are your representative's PRINCIPLE nomination; #1 on their list; then you will get the appointment. (Assuming of course that you meet all the minimum requirements of the academy). Some representatives feel that the academy knows better who on the list is the "Best" candidate. Those representatives allow the academy to choose. They have to choose someone on the list. 1 at minimum. Some representative TELL the academy which one it will be. (The PRINCIPLE nominee). later... mike....

You should realize that the amount of principals from yrs pass are typically around 30%. Also principal and number 1 may or may not mean the same. A principal must be given the appt if qual, and they are typically number 1 on the list. The MOC can also hand in list that are ranked, thus this is my Number 1 person, but if the AFA says somebody else has a better WCS you don't have to give it to my person.

Whoa. Time out.

When the MOC submits the names they use ONE of the three following methods:
1. Competitive. The names are in no particular order and the academy picks by merit the top qualified candidate.
This is the most common method, by far.

2. Principle with competing alternates:
The MOC names a "prinicple" who will receive an appointment if triple qualified. If the principle is not qualifed or refuses the appointment then one will be offered by merit to the top candidate from among the competing alternates.

3. Principle with numbered alternates:
Principle same as above but in the case of not being qualified or refusal the appointment is offered to the next numbered candidate on the list (i.e. #2) and so on until the slot is filled. This is the least common method.

If your MOC uses the "competitive method" and the top candidate rejects the appointment, the appointment will be offered to the next competitive candidate on the list. This is why there is a lot of juggling at the end.
Kids are waiting for their acceptances to get in - not everyone who is offered an appointment accepts it. Some will accept an appointment and get off another waiting list and then reject their acceptance.
It is a very fluid process that does not stop until the class is filled.

I was thinking about this, and is there only ONE board that meets and makes all of these decisions?? It's gotta be a tough job. Regardless the outcomes, we should all send these people "thank you" cards. haha,

I am getting quite antsy!

I am controlling my eagerness, but I am also getting very nervous. The AFA is the only place I really want to go, as everyone else probably also feels.

i know how you feel man! i felt the same exact way until i got my appointment last week! what a relief! but at the same time, you come to realize that all the effort and hard work you put in the past year and all of high school were only the beginning!! ah!!! now the tough part starts...

ill be rooting for ya! you'll get it! ;]

I was on another forum and someone from last year in the same situation as my son this year (principle nomination waiting on appointment) did not get their appointment until March 16th. I am a rookie so I cannot comment on regular nomination but Just a Mom and Christcorp has given good info along the lines I have heard from others. Good Luck

There is no exact date really. Just have to wait this one out.

I agree...for anyone able to make it this far in the application process certainly shows that they are truly motivated and really want this experience. Thanks for the other comments too guys.

I was told that appointments will be handed out even through June.

Yea, see that presents a problem... I have been accepted to a bunch of other schools that need commitments and deposits on whose going to be attending before June! Also I have been offered an internship over the summer if I am not selected for the Academy...hopefully I will find out before then.

My parents told me to accept all the schools (and pay for the spot to be held) so my options are open - even though USAFA is what I've always wanted for about the last seven years.

Done till March?

Assuming no LOA, are we pretty much all in limbo until March, and is that also when we will hear about Waivers that have been requested by AFA?

Thus far, the waiting is the hardest part.
