Any other 2016 USCGA hopefuls out there who are still waiting?

Give it to me straight?

Ok... so nothing in the mail today here either. I was just wondering about the process. My DS had a nomination to the USNA and when the time got short, we could tell that we were probably going to get a TWE, which made it much easier when it did come.

I do believe that DS was considered just recently for the USCGA as we heard from someone at USCGA just last week. However, it seems to me that if he were going to get an appointment, he would have received a call by now.

So... I am wondering... have our odds decreased since we haven't heard anything in the last few days? I know that no one knows for sure, but it would be nice to be kinda expecting that TWE, if that is what seems to be the most likely scenario at this point. Anybody willing to give it to me straight? I can handle it. I know that I should just sit back and wait... after all it's just a few more days. But still... I'm asking.

Texan'sMom,

I received a conditional appointment in the mail just yesterday. I'm further east than texas (assuming that's where you're located based on your username) so it could just be taking a few more days to reach you. :thumb:

Thanks for the info and congratulations! I hope that it turns into a full appointment for you!! Do you mind me asking if you received a phone call first?

Thanks. I did not receive a phone call so the TWE with the conditional appointment was quite a scare, especially after the emotional fiasco with the "ready for review" TWE last week. Good luck, I hope your son gets an appointment in the next few days!

However, it seems to me that if he were going to get an appointment, he would have received a call by now.

Appointments will continue to go out until the entire class of 265 is filled with cadets who have accepted their appointments.

That will include any "fill-ins" from the waiting list that may come AFTER (as well as before) May1 when more "declines" will come in.

So... I am wondering... have our odds decreased since we haven't heard anything in the last few days?

Your "odds" go "down" every time an appointment is released that doesn't have your name on it. Whereas you were once looking at "1 of 360" you may now be looking at getting "1 of 40" - the fewer remaining appointments, the longer the odds.

Until you hear "no" the answer is still "maybe."

Of course, your son can always call the Admissions Office before a final decision is made and remove his name from consideration voluntarily, which will remove all doubt (and hope).

Are there any final numbers available to summarize the number of offers and conditional offers extended during EA and RA, the number of offers to CGAS and the number of individuals who accepted a place on the waiting list?

My DS is still waiting to hear also. But we did receive a letter a week and a half ago stating that his app would be being reviewed in the next few weeks. Although getting that letter answered some questions, the feeling of seeing the TWE in the mailbox was emotional to say the least! You are not alone!

Hopefully, today she will see it in the mailbox.Today is my Birthday and I would love that gift of "good news" for my daughter today. :) Can't wait that phone to ring <3

I want to clarify this statement.

Just looking at statistical probability (with every file being equally "ranked") then the above would be true.

In reality, as each candidate file is different, the "odds" cannot be given so simplistically as in the example above.

A "strong" candidate is still a "strong" candidate regardless of the number of remaining appointments.

Sorry for any confusion or concern.

Got the TWE today.......................:frown:
So glad the wait is over.
The USCGA's loss is SUNY Maritime's gain!!
In four short years he WILL be a USCG Officer!
Good Luck to the rest of you waiting!!

TWE

TWE arrived today. Now we just have to wait for USMMA to pick DS from the hold list, or not. I am grateful for the service academy forums and everything I have learned here to help my DS with the application process. Good luck to those of you still waiting!
Best regards,

Help a new Poster please! What is a twe and a bfe... i assume one is good news and the other bad news ...just getting started with this....also, is DS dear son?

Thanks

TWE is Thin White Envelope. A letter stating that DS (dear son) or DD (dear daughter) was not accepted to the academy would come in a TWE. A TWE could also be a request for additional info, medical records etc. A BFE is a Big Fat Envelope, and most likely contains an appointment, forms instructions etc. I know all this because I asked this same question last year.

ozzymom and wilmared...

...just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear about your TWE's. I can see it's unlikely that there will be many (or even any) more appointments on the forum. I just wanted to wish you and your families the best of luck in whatever you and you kids pursue. I know there are great things ahead - especially for anyone who has been competitive for an appointment!! Best wishes!!

Thanks...that helps....funny though, my appointment (35 years ago) came in a TWE...times change. Best luck to all...our Service Academies our so tough to compete for...there are simply not enough slots for all that deserve and want to serve. What other commissioning sources are being actively used by the CG? I know they have OCS and a college program....are they filling those programs or they being reduced as well?

Thanks for any info!

I would like to know if the Coast Guard Pre Commissioning Initiative will still be available for my son's junior year at Cal Maritime! That is the plan if he isn't accepted to USMMA this year. DS is already accepted to the Marine Transportation program at CSUM, his plan C. He will start as a freshman in the fall.
Best regards,

For year 2012, the O-1 commisioning is as follows:

ALCGOFF 030/12
SUBJ: OFFICER ASSIGNMENT YEAR 2012 (AY12) FINAL REPORT

  • CGA CLASS OF 2012: 232 (Last year = 226)
  • OCS: 119 (Last year = 78)
  • DCO (C4IT, AVIATORS, DCIO, DCL, MARGRAD): 37 (Last year = 73)
  • CWO-LT: 19 (Last Year = 22)

I think CSPI eligibility require attending a HBCU, HSI, or TCU.

I don't think Cal Maritime qualifies, but I could be wrong.

However, he would be eligible for the Direct Commission Maritime Academy Graduate Program.

I would recommend he talk to a recruiter, as both programs are not part of the USCGA and they require specific answer that you probably won't get on a USCGA-centric forum.

Thanks Luigi!

Please continue all of our training: I agree: it looks like Designated and Approved Martime Academy Grads (including MMA!)....use the CG DCO option.

What is HBCU, HSI, and TCU requirement for the college assistance program for College Juniors and Seniors? I don't understand those abreviations. Graduates of this program commission thru OCS, correct?

Regards!

Thank you, Luigi. You are correct, I confused CSPI for the Direct Commission Maritime Academy Graduate Program. DS has been in contact with the recruiter at Cal Maritime. One way or the other, DS will do his best to earn the privilege of serving as an officer in the Coast Guard.
