Name's Adam from Florida (close to NAS Pensacola). I plan on going to the USAFA but i'm applying for the USNA as well. I just received my letter yesterday that I got into NAPS. I guess it'll be a good back-up school if the USAFA doesn't pull through for me. :shake: In the end, I plan on flying the F22 Raptor for the Air Force.

Well if you go to NAPS, I wouldn't plan on flying an F-22 for the Air Force.

Naps so soon?

Doesn't admission to NAPS depend on not getting a nomination therefore knowing you won't get an appointment? We just had our interviews with the MOC's on Thursday and Friday, so there is no way of knowing this soon if we got a nomination......please explain this I am new here......

Even if I went to NAPS I can reapply to USAFA next year. If that doesn't work I can go to USNA for 4 years and simply go into the Air Force afterwards.

From what I understand, when you get an appointment to NAPS or any prep school, the academy will still review your application if anything changes. For example, if you retake the ACT/SAT and get higher scores, they could send you a letter of appointment into the academy. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I already had the Presidential Nomination since August, so it's not dependent on your nomination status. However, since I am admitted to NAPS and if I so choose that route, I don't need a nomination. So if I had a Senator's Nom, they would take mine back and give it to someone else.

No, SRHSMOM, it's possible for an applicant to get a nomination AND either a turn-down or NAPS. There are more nominations than appointments. My son received a nom + NAPS a couple years ago.

Okay, thats what I was thinking, I would think you would be turned down first then offered NAPS, it sounds like this student was offered NAPS before hearing back from his nominations, although I did not know originally that he had a presidential nomination. This is all new to my family. My son just had two really good MOC interviews; however we would be perfectly happy if he was offered NAPS as well. He is a late bloomer, a senior who just turned 17 in October, time is on his side here. I do have a question maybe some one could tell me. The whole triple Q'd thing, do you get a letter stating this? We have received the medical Q but nothing else. I wasn't too excited about it until I read some of the other posts that make even that seem like a big accomplishment. We also did not receive a weekend invite.

Those letters: we had friends last year who got them, and friends who did not...everyone really should try to chill about the letters if that is possible. For my son, it was nice to get something from them every few weeks; it was kind of like hearing "we like you, and we're interested." We know several current cadets who did not get that feedback. In the end, on Rday none of this matters, it really doesn't.

when I say new I mean I am really new, what is "R" day? Do you mean to say that even the ones who didn't get the letters still got in? We haven't gotten anything from the academy other than the website telling us all is completed and in, which I find a little discomforting since my son is the well rounded, type they supposedly seek. I can see where it is easy to get caught up in all the anxiety of waiting.....I am already on this site several times a day....I am going to take chill pill and go shopping til nightfall.......

My first choice school is USAFA/USAFA Prep School.

So considering that I already have an appointment to NAPS, which is my second choice, should I still apply to other colleges like Embry-Riddle, UF, or FSU?

Don't bother the Navy if you want to do USAF. It's not being honest.

If you want USAF, and USAFA/USAFAPS doesn't give you an appointment this year, then go to another college and reapply. Don't take the slot of someone who would kill to go NAPS/USNA.

Zap - I am not sure that is a fair statement. Kids have lots of reasons for attending service academies.
If Fyterpilot wants to be a fighter pilot he can surely do that from either USNA or USAFA. What he needs to do is reconcile what his choices will be IF flight school doesn't work out. If he is just as good with joining the Navy as the AF without flying then I am okay with that.
Sometimes life works out for a reason - you don't get what you want but you end up wanting what you get.

Just A Mom makes a very good, but then again Zap has a good point D: it could go either way, just depends on how you feel.

USAFA is my first choice, but if I was offered NAPS I would def jump on it.

To answer the question - conventional wisdom holds that you should have a "back up" school. If you get sick or injured and can't go the academy or prep school you have some place to go.
The decision is up to you.

If you accept the NAPS offer, and then are handed a better offer (better for you) you certainly may then reject the offer to NAPS.

RIF (Reading is Fundamental) ERROR TO FOLLOW. BE WARNED.

You're contradicting yourself. You've already been offered NAPS, but you're not jumping at it; you're treating it as a back-door way to get into the Air Force F-22 program. Which is it?

My earlier statement was perfectly fair. How would you feel if I came to you asking for you to help me and, when you were through, I went off and worked for someone else? How would you feel if I walked up to you and said, "Please pay for my education, but I really don't want to work for you. I want to work for the other guy whou didn't take me."

If you want to go to USAFA and fly F-22's, and that's your primary goal, then all is well and good, but you should be applying to USAFA or AFROTC, not looking at USNA and NAPS as some kind of back door.

If, however, your goal is to graduate from a SA, regardless of branch, then your appointment to NAPS trumps any other school or program outside another SAPS appointment or an appointment directly into a SA.

The only one who can decide that is you, but remember that decisions have consequences. Choose wisely.
