Just wondering if any of you would have any ideas for summer leadership programs, etc. that are legitimate?

Sea Cadets, Civil Air Patrol, Scouting, Summer Camps, Vacation Bible School, Boys/Girls State, Internships.

They have a High School leadership program in conjunction with community college in out area. Takes place during school yr.

My DS volunteered to coach youth flag football, a program run by our city recreation department. You might look for something similar.

I'm still amazed these camps get no attention on this forum.

DS #2 attended the Navy Camp at Port Hueneme as a rising HS Junior. He applied for and received a scholarship from SAME. He had to write an essay which was good practice for writing and asking for money. Was also a good experience to fly off by himself. The cost to us was the airfare.

When we picked him up at the airport, he announced that he didn't need to go to college, that he would just enlist in the SeaBees since "Officers really don't do anything." Needless to say, the camp was run by retired and active enlisted folks. He had a really good time, actually solving problems and building things. He ended up receiving an NROTC scholarship, from which he was medically DQ'ed, but graduated with a Mech E degree.

Another vote for Boys/Girls State, if you can get it.

Many non-profits have summer internships. Call around to any shelters, homeless service ministries, and the like.

The Sea Cadets -- which is a leadership program -- have a ton of summer trainings, including Recruit Training and Petty Officer Leadership Academy. You can do those trainings IF AND ONLY IF you are a Sea Cadet and have completed certain prerequisites that usually take a few months. If you're interested for next summer, the time to get in touch with your local Sea Cadet unit is now. You can't just sign up in May.

My DD tried last year but did not get chosen. This year they all conflict with Girl’s State and 🤞🏻the summer SA programs.

My DS volunteers at a food pantry by assembling meals and organizing donations. He’s a also a tutor for elementary students.

My son did a SAME camp. It was great!
