My son is planning one and I was wondering if anyone else was.
My son is planning on an overnight visit sometime after the holidays.
Us too after the holidays. Since we live on west coast I was planning to see first if my son receives a nomination? Is there an advantage to visiting sooner rather than later?
I don't see an advantage except it could help your son make his decision on weather the academy is a fit for him or not. Is the USMMA his first choice?
Yes usmma is his first choice. He has an interview with moc next week and if nominated we definitely plan a visit. Just hate to fly to New York if he isn't nominated!
Does he have an LOA yet?
Not that I know of, he did his dodmerb 2 weeks ago and still needs to do his cfa. How common are loa's?
I believe they start off slow this time of year and then start going out more and more as it gets further on in the process. He won't get one until all his things are done. The quicker you complete you application and physicals the better. He could get an LOA before the nomination but get that app done ASAP !
It is not necessary for a candidate to have a nomination or an approved DODMERB exam to receive an LOA. My understanding is that an LOA requires the candidate's application to be completed and a passing PFA.
LOAs are given earlier in process and are often conditional upon successfully completing DODMERB, a nomination, 7th semester grades, etc. At least that is how it worked for my DS. His LOA came in early Nov '13, his nom in early Jan '14 and his DODMERB approval in Feb '14 (late as I recall). Both were conditional in the LOA as well as his seven semester grades.
I suspect if medical and nom were good to go, USMMA would simply offer an appointment, conditional the on 7th semester grades.
PS. I highly recommend a visit. I believe it is viewed very positively by the admissions staff. Nothing to back that up other than my subjective opinion.
LOA can be issued while CFA is pending. They require you to complete it in 30 days. I don't know if that is technically considered an LOA. Portal said "Conditional".
I do know that they won't review your application without part3 of app including all LoRs. So make sure you stay on top of your teachers and guidance counsellor. Many of them treat this like a normal school and feel they have plenty of time. You need to emphasize that it is rolling admissions with a state quota and is highly competitive.
DS did an overnight visit in November. Loved the school! I am baking cookies to send to the mids he stayed with and went to class with as a thank you. Wonderful experience
My son is visiting next weekend. It's an athletic overnight.
My son is going 2/11/16 but for the day. Going to USCGA on 2/12/16 for Bear's day.
My son visited in the beginning of September, it was actually the first day of parents weekend. He enjoyed it very much! He wanted to stay longer, lol. He even got to go out on one of the boats they rebuilt
My DD visited for an overnight in Sept, she loved it. The Midshipmen treated her well and answered all of her questions. She received her LOA in October, She Received her Nomination in November from our Congressman and in December received her appointment letter and accepted her appointment
