Anybody get a Air Force ROTC scholarship...

After reading all of the sad news, I almost feel guilty posting this. My son got the good news that he has won an AFROTC scholarship. We have no idea what type it is yet. He put down two types of engineering for his major. Honestly I hope he turns it down so that someone else can have it. He already has an offer from the USCG academy that I hope he takes. The AFROTC was originally just a back up plan in case the USCGA did not materialize. It's up to him. All we ask is that he makes a decision in a timely manner so that one of his two slots gets offered quickly to someone else. Best wishes to those still waiting.

My son's was awarded a scholarship too. He put History, Math & Mech Engineering on the application for majors (odd combination to throw in History, but the list is really right for him). I will wait patiently (not!) to have him call Maxwell later today.

Congrats Islander and homewith4, and congratulations particularly to your sons!!:thumb:

My son found out today that his scholarship is a Type 7 scholarship for $9000 per year for four years. I also noted that DodMerb was updated this morning with "offer extended" and with medical status "Qualified".

Congrats to the others!

Still waiting to hear from USAFA and other schools. SHU offered my son a $70,000 four year scholarship into the school of Diplomacy and International Relations and Embry Riddle offered $12,000 total over four years.

I never understand where this $9K number comes from? The Air Force website says:
"Type 7Pays college tuition up to the equivalent of the in-state rate and $900 per year for books. If a student receives a Type-7 offer but wishes to attend a college/university where they do not qualify under the guidelines above, the student can convert the four-Year Type-7 scholarship to a three-Year Type-2 scholarship. You cannot activate a Type-7 scholarship at a non-qualifying school and pay the difference."

My state university COA is 18K per year tuition plus room & board and we've been told repeatedly by the AFROTC PMS at this school and other state schools (some OOS that are willing to offer in-state tuition rates to AFROTC Type 7 awardees) that a Type 7 will cover the entire tuition. As I read the above quote from the AFROTC site, a Type 7 cannot be used at a private college....period. A Type 2 can, if you are willing to trade a 4 year Type 7 for a 3 year Type 2.

Am I missing something or have I been misinformed?

Aglages,

I think you are right. Our state of legal residence is Texas, so the in state tuition rate at A&M is closer to $4000. but if you're an Ohio resident and want to be an OSU buckeye it's closer to $9000.

Yes, the Type 7 will pay 100% tuition at a state school and/or a school at which you qualify for in state tuition. I have a daughter that is in her sophmore year at a state school where the tuition is $11,000. She has a type 7 and her tuition is paid 100% by AFROTC.

Yesterday my younger daughter received in the mail an offer for a type 2 AFROTC scholarship!

Thanks for the verification jmark1616 and homewith4.
Also, congratulations jmark1616 to you and your daughter!!!:thumb:

I just got the news on Monday that I received a type 1 AFROTC scholarship. Does anyone know about how many people get this type or how competitive it is? I am very excited about it as I will be able to afford a few schools I wasn't still even considering (Duke, Vanderbilt, Carnegie Mellon). I thought about applying to USAFA but I decided against it as I wanted a more "normal" college experience. Thanks!

You sir, are a very, very lucky guy, and I congratulate you on earning that scholarship.

From looking around, AFROTC scholarships are pretty hard to get at all this year, so that by itself is pretty good. According to the AFROTC website: Approximately 5% of our four-year scholarship winners will be offered a Type-1 scholarship.

Great job!

Well I'm actually a woman, but thank you! I'm very excited.
