Anybody get a Air Force ROTC scholarship...

After reading through this I'm a bit demoralized.

I had my interview on December 4th. It would have been sooner, but they messed up my dates... more than once. I have been eagerly awaiting any type of confirmation. My status on the AFROTC website says: "Congratulations! You are an eligible applicant in the AFROTC Scholarship Program. Someone from an AFROTC Detachment will contact you soon to schedule your interview. If you have not been contacted within 30 days, notify this office."

I don't see how I could have missed the December board. The recruiter could have easily faxed them my information December 7th, but you know the military, they probably don't allow that.

If I'm on the January board I wont know until February 12th. It'll kill me to wait that long, but what can you do? The kicker though is I have to decide on colleges by February first. It would just be nice to know before I decide on civilian or military college. (I'm aware civilian colleges have ROTC programs, but the civilian one I would choose does not. The Citadel would be my military choice.)

Pretty much just posted here to rant about it.

Thanks for sharing (ranting). Seriously, if you needed to hear earlier you should have started the application process sooner. Additionally, there is no guarantee that you will ever receive a scholarship let alone be awarded one from the first board that reviewed your application. I understand your frustration (my daughter and I wish we had a decision also) but if you are going to be an officer in the military you should probably get used to this "hurry up and wait" approach.

Good luck with your scholarship and I hope you get an answer in time for your college decisions.:thumb:

I regret not starting the process earlier, but no one but my recruiter was helping me and all he did was tell me that the scholarship existed. Like you said, there is still no guarantee that I will even get a scholarship on any board. I'm used to having to "hurry up and wait" I'm just sick and tired of it. 2009 has been a constant barrage of me having to fix other people's mistakes, especially now with the family home for Christmas, so my patience is about as thin as possible right now.

Thanks for your kind words and good luck to you as well.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, when did your daughter have her interview?

I have often thought those applicants whose parents are involved in the ROTC process have an advantage over those doing it by themselves. If nothing else, it is one more person to keep track of deadlines, forms and do research. You have my respect for getting it done by yourself.:thumb:

My daughter's interview was at the end of September and this past board was her first review. If it is any consolation, I just checked the AFROTC scholarship site and it stills says she was "not selected". At least you don't have to look at that message until the next board meets.

Thanks a lot. Sound like you got it done alright. I could have gotten my interview a lot sooner if I didn't have so many scheduling problems for my physical fitness portion with my coach at school.

I'm probably going to go to military college regardless of getting this or not. You don't need a scholarship to become an Air Force pilot, it would just be nice, haha.

I don't know what you know about the scholarships, but if your daughter still does not receive a scholarship she could apply for a 3 year, or even a 3 and 1 half year scholarship. The 3 and 1 half year is kind of unofficial, but when she gets to college just get her to ask about a scholarship. I've heard from several sources, official and unofficial, that scholarships are a lot easier to get once you are in college. I say this because that's what I'm going to do if the 4 year scholarship doesn't work out.

Thanks once again!

That certainly sounds like it. The captain who interviewed me told me that a 3.5 year scholarship did exist so that's most likely it.

My son's status changed sometime yesterday...it now says his packet will meet the next available selection board.

marauder86: I'm sure you are wondering when his interview was...since we live overseas, there is only one interview for AFA/AFRTOC the ALO completes the paperwork for both opportunities. His interview for the AFA was done in August.

I've never heard of the 3.5 year scholarships, but I do know that there are scholarships the individual detachments can award on their own for specific majors.
Thanks for the link Eagle 1. It is my understanding that the list of eligible majors varies from year-to-year depending on the Air Forces needs. For instance they have offered these scholarships the last couple of years to nurses when the AF didn't meet it's recruiting goals.

Coincidentally my daughter just forwarded the following email to me that she received today from an AFROTC recruiter:

"HSSP Applicants,

Now that the AFROTC HSSP first board results are posted, I’d like to tell you about some opportunities you still have for scholarships!

Express Scholarships (List Below): Full Rides to anywhere in the majors listed below! _____college offers Languages and Linguist express scholarships. However, you can go to any school you desire. Det XXX is affiliated with 56 different _____regional universities and colleges! If Det XXX isn’t affiliated with the school of your choice in _____region, let me know and I’ll make an agreement with them! Contact me for details!

Electrical Engineering

Computer Engineering

Environmental Engineering

Nursing

Linguist (Email or call about which languages)"

The above email continued with some more details and obviously I removed the identifying information to protect the sender. My daughter did not apply to any colleges in the above region, but it seems as though the sender does have access to who are the HSSP applicants. I had thought that the "Express Scholarships" were for those students currently attending college. Anybody else get an email like this from an AFROTC recruiter?

Received an email response from the above AFROTC recruiter:

"The Express Scholarship starts once you meet the required 24 completed semester units and have a 2.5 cumulative GPA."

I think semester units are college credits.

When my son was corresponding with a university, the AFROTC scholarship officer stated that he could award son an express scholarship immediately for 4yrs for Chinese. It seems that detachments may have leeway. Contact each detachment and ask. Doesn't hurt.

Now that son has type 1 for language for any school, he's contacting each detachment to see if they are an approved school for that language. (website for approved majors may not always be up to date)

I believe detachment officers will have the most current info.

My son received a AFROTC Scholarship Dec 2009 - he did NOT apply to the Academy!
Good Luck!

It did not appear that the 1st Boards in Dec were just for Academy applications.

Thank you Meister. On this board it is difficult to determine because so many people ARE applying to both.

I have a nomination to USAFA and did not get picked for a ROTC scholarship by the December board. My status says I will meet the next board.

...that did NOT also apply to the Air Force Academy? As best I can determine everybody who has received their AFROTC scholarship during the last few days are also applying to the AFA. Is this round of notifications just for that group or is there somebody who is an exception?
My Son did receive a AFROTC Type 7 (converted to Type 2) Scholarship after the Dec Boards. He did NOT apply to the Academy.

Good Luck to you.

I was informed Tuesday January 5th that my interview (which I had on December 4th) was received by Maxwell AFB on that same day, Tuesday January 5th.

This is frustrating since it took the USC detachment 36 days to submit something I was told would be submitted the very next work day. Not to mention all the other problems I had with the USC detachment. I even emailed them twice over the course of the last week and a half to figure out what was going on... Got a response today saying that it was submitted... No explanation as to why it took so long.

Frustration aside, all of my documents are now where they should be. I wish they had gotten it right and then I'd have been on the December board, but I am content that my information was not lost.

I wanted to update you all who might have seen my earlier posts complaining about this great inefficiency.

I'm not sure that it is any consolation, but even if the Air Force interviewer at USC had sent you interview in the same day, you may not have been reviewed by the December board. After the interview is recieved it still needs to be processed at Maxwell and prepared (graded?) for the board. It is bound to take some time for that process.

Good news is that you are ready for the next board and have not (like some of us) been passed over by the December board.

Good Luck!:thumb:

Thanks for the encouragement. The reason I say I would have made the December board is because the day that they originally had me scheduled for an interview, they took an additional day off. Then the interview had to be postponed a while longer.

Regardless, it feels good to know I don't have to worry about something being lost!

Good luck to you and all others who will meet the January board. Please post how things turned out for you when you know.
