Anybody get a Air Force ROTC scholarship...

I just want to say good luck to all of you still waiting. My youngest son is also waiting to see if he will get an AFROTC scholarship. We would be happy with just a type 7 since he has already been accepted to the only college he wants to attend, which is in state. I think he has a fair chance to receive a scholarship because he wants to major in engineering, has great grades, several AP classes and good extra circulars. The part I am worried about is the sports. He hasn’t been involved in organized sports during high school with the exception of summer league softball. He lifts weights and runs year round, does PT with his CAP squadron, and does lots of hiking with his Search and Rescue group. I am wondering if this will be enough to make up for the lack of high school sports. Any thoughts?

Your son sounds like a very strong candidate for an AFROTC scholarship. I'm fairly confident that when the board reviews all his ECs along with CAP and S&R that will be enough to off-set any perceived lack of organized athletics. Just my opinion of course......
Good luck to both of you!

That is what I am hoping the board will see also. Even if he doesn't get the scholarship he wants to join AFROTC, so at worst he would have to reapply for scholarship money next year. Just like most parents I know, I don't want him to have to take out lots of loans to get through college.

It seems to me that many candidates applying to AFROTC and/or AFA have the hope of flying. My son wants to serve as a civil engineer. What AF careers do candidates on this forum hope to choose?

I want to be a fighter pilot. Any form of pilot would be great but I would like to be able to go into combat while being a pilot.

I also applied for an AFROTC scholarship and did not apply to AFA. I went to the post office yesterday and sent my package, so I expect to have a long wait to hear any word.

ha ha! Foreign Area Officer is in the Army...son also got AROTC scholarship, so I got my branches mixed up. There is an equivalent to that in AF, but don't know the exact title.

basically, some day, working in an embassy using language and culture skills.

WAMom68- Thanks...that's a great job description you found. Exactly what he wants to do...whichever branch.

I've got a question for you guys. I've recently been promoted to C/Capt in the Civil Air Patrol, and I was wondering if I should bother contacting a scholarship technician to make note of that.

My resume currently has me as a C/1st Lt because of when it was submitted, and I don't know if it's a good idea to try and have them update that on the resume and counselor certification sheet (there's an option for the Earhart award for C/Capt's on that sheet).

I would update it...certainly wouldn't hurt you and it may help.

I just tried calling them, but I got a recording that went along the lines of that they were not currently available due to the high volume of applications, to check the AFROTC website for my status, and to not leave a voice message.

When I tried emailing them a few weeks back (shortly after the December results were announced) to confirm that my application was simply just waiting for the next board and not lost at some point (my interview was done before the last board met, but only a few days before) I never got a response.

Email them again, wait three days, then email them a third time. They aren't responded to me right now but that helped me last time they wouldn't reply.

I know that they've received every document, I just wanted to confirm with them that my record is meeting the next board in case something happened on their end with the paperwork - particularly because the message saying my record would meet the next available selection board was posted before the last board.

I just sent another email their way with my original question and information about the promotion.

It's at that point now where this is the only thing hanging over me. Colleges that I've wanted to go to have accepted me, and my senior year in high school is going by just fine, but playing the waiting game for this particular thing, especially after expecting to hear something from the first selection board, is not very fun

Reach out to the ROTC scholarship officers at the schools on your list. Since you have been accepted at those schools (Good Job, btw!!) they have a vested interest to help you out.

I know how you feel. I could have made the December board but my detachment decided to take the day off on the day of my interview. Then they rescheduled it at the last possible day that it could meet the board. The interviewer left me with the impression I would be on the board. (this was on Dec. 4th) I found out that the man did not submit my interview until around January 6th... I would be extremely pissed off if they put me through all that and I don't get a scholarship anyways
