Anybody get a Air Force ROTC scholarship...

Nothing here either. Good to know about Feb 12, but I'm still stalking the web site and mailman!

What's Your Back-up Plan?

While we are all waiting eagerly for the board decisions, I was wondering what your back-up plan is if you or your child does not get the AFROTC scholarship in this round?

My D has her heart on being an AF Nurse. She has a great resume w/ leadership positions & community services and she felt really good about her interview, her only concern is that her gpa and test scores are just average.

She has been accepted into 2 universities' School of Nursing and was told by her AF interviewer that if she did not get the scholarship this round, she can attend the first semester out of our own pocket while enrolled in a nursing program, apply for the AFROTC nursing scholarship and then she would pretty much be a "shoe-in." I'm a little hesitant b/c these schools are very expensive private schools which we can only afford with the scholarship. Do you think it is wise to enroll them in a school "in hopes" that she will get the scholarship half-way thru her freshman year?

Our other back-up plan was for her to attend our local state school or community college. While she is in these schools, can she apply for the college AFROTC scholarship for a school she plans to transfer to? We're not really sure how this process works.

Sorry for all the questions...just lots of things to think about while we wait for the decision. Any input/suggestions you may have is greatly appreciated. I'm also very interested in hearing everyone else's back-up plan. Thanks!

Back-up plan

My daughter's back-up plan to go to Norwich University for physics. She has been offered a merit scholarship from them. She would like to go to Embry Riddle for Air Traffic Management, but I don't think we could swing it without a merit or ROTC scholarship. She also has a good sized merit scholarship to University of Hartford. We are still waiting to hear from Suny at Stonybrook, UNH, Simmons, Plymouth State and and, of course, The Air Force Academy.

This scholarship is the third type which I described to you here:

Although designed to be a three year scholarship it has been used as a 3.5 year scholarship during the past couple of years. The draw back to this plan is that there is NO GUARANTEE that it will be offered for 3.5 years or EVEN 3 years. It all depends on the needs of the Air Force.

If it helps you at all, my daughter (who also wants to be an AF Nurse) was told the same thing as yours by MORE than one recruiter. My suggestion is that if you go this route (and we might) you should be prepared financially to pay for the first year of college (in case the 3.5 option is not available). And of course, don't forget the costs of Room & Board which is not covered by AFROTC.

Normally this idea would work pretty well, but it may not apply to all nursing programs. If you are currently applying for a HSSP (High School Scholarship Program) then your daughter should also have applied to direct entry nursing programs (in order to be eligible). These programs are difficult to transfer from school to school, and often times you will need to retake some classes that were either missed or scheduled for a different year of the program. Community Colleges are great starting points but often do not offer a direct entry program (you take a year of prerequisites). If you choose this plan I would:
1. make sure that whatever school your daughter wants to eventually transfer TO, will accept the credits from CC or your State College and confirm which year of the nursing program she would enter

2. Keep all of these colleges within the same AF detachment. I know this won't be easy (possible?) but you must keep in mind that in order to receive an In-College Scholarship Program (ICSP) award you need the detachment to recommend you (her). If she isn't in the detachment (at least hopefully in another) they can't evaluate her and appreciate what a great AF Nurse she'll eventually become.
From the AF site: "All application materials for in-college scholarships will be completed at the Air Force ROTC detachment serving your school."
At the very least, you should discuss this option thoroughly with the detachment PMS at the college that she is going to transfer TO.
Any input/suggestions you may have is greatly appreciated. I'm also very interested in hearing everyone else's back-up plan. Thanks!
I have rambled endlessly on my daughter's back up plan(s) and if you are interested (and bored) you can read it on this thread on page 7 - post #67.

Now I have a question: Do you have more than one daughter? Back in 2007 you had a daughter that was also interested in Air Force Nursing what happened to her?

My sons back up is a 4 yr AROTC with room and board at Tulane. He was leaning toward Purdue but feels Tulane is better for pre-med.

My son's plans are:

First Choice: USAFA ... if he gets an appointment

Second Choice: AFROTC at whichever University he attends. No scholarship yet...waiting on 2nd boards. He has already been accepted into Embry Riddle as an Embry Riddle Scholar and received a small scholarship ($12k). Waiting on the other schools (Tulane, George Washington, American University).

Back up plan: Go to one of these schools with a mix of scholarships and loans.

Son's Backup to the backup is Ole Miss (Chinese) or UAlabama(Math). He's received full out-of-state tuition scholarships to both. We found schools that had automatic scholarships that we knew he'd qualify for based on test/gpa.

BlueSkies -Out of curiosity is that 12k scholarship per year for Embry Riddle?

Thanks everyone! Good to hear everyone's got good back-up plans.

AGLAGES - as always, thank you for your very thorough and helpful response. That is all good to know. And yes, my other D received a 4yr Type 1 for any major. She is a nursing major and is doing great with ROTC. She's looking forward to her PDT for nursing this summer in San Antonio.

Crossing fingers that everyone hears good news soon!!

Congratulations!!! Two daughters in Air Force nursing....you must be (and I am sure you are) very proud. Did your first daughter receive her Type 1 scholarship back in the "Good 'Ol Days" when nursing was considered a Technical Major?

Aw, they only offered me 7k (per year). Oh well, any aid is good aid

Though unfortunately ERAU is dependent on what the Air Force has to say. Otherwise I'll just go to one of my backups up near me.

Singaporemom, If my son doesnt end up receiving the NROTC scholarship he too will attend Univ of AL with a full tuition scholarship.

Eagle 1, how did you hear? My daughter's interview was sent in right before the January boards, so hopefully they considered her, but we haven't heard anything yet. Her on-line status doesn't reflect either way.

I believe Eagle 1 was referring to what Embry Riddle has offered him for scholarship money.

Oh, ok. My daughter received the 12,000 (total) Embry Riddle Scholarship but it won't be nearly enough. She has applied for some civilian scholarships, but since she wants to be an officer in the AF no matter what, an AFROTC scholarship would be a nice bonus.

guardianvg: I understand completely.
BTW - There are many of us waiting on the latest Air Force board results. I can assure you that when they are released YOU WILL KNOW IT. Good luck to you and your daughter.:thumb:

Gaswimmom-We'll keep a lookout for our kids plans. Son has Nrotc scholarship, but don't know about the school yet. Just got email from the school that they haven't received his transcript yet (sent in January) so we have to resend... argh...

More info...

I spoke to Maxwell AFB today. They hinted that we ought to check our online on Friday, Feb 5th...I think they will be released starting then.

Also 1500 candidates for the 2nd board and only 35% will get scholarships (of any type). Last year was 40%...budget cuts... So a little over 500 awards out of the 1500...

I was unable to get any info on the breakdown of percentages of type 1, 2, etc...

My son was not selected for a scholarship for the first boards but it said that he ranked highly and therefore was being looked at in the 2nd boards....so, we'll see...fingers crossed.

So looks like friday is the day to find out...
