my RC emailed me yesterday saying that my chances for entry into USMA this year are slim. He also asked if I would be interested in civil prep for a year, on an AOG scholarship, however he said that if I said yes, I would be placed on the OML list. I obviously said yes, but how likely can a person receive this scholarship? Also are there any people out there who have been through this and have any advice? I would love to have an additional year

Depending on the year, 40 to 50 AoG scholarships are offered. Consider this opportunity as a great gift!! In my observations, Cadets do much better after attending a Civil Prep school, as compared to direct appointments. Why you may ask? The simply fact is you're a year older, maturer, better equipped to handle academic stress and your time management skills will be improved, to just name a few. Your ACT/SAT scores will improve tremendously, thus if you decide not to attend a SA you'll have more doors open for you as far as State U selection. I would encourage you to research the different Civil Prep schools that are available. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. I prefer NWP. The civil prep schools do have communications with WP and report on your progress, they will help you with the application process such as SOEs. You will need to get another NOM but it will be much easier since you are a AoG scholar

Thank you for the info, tugboat. I wasn't actually offered a spot yet though! Do you know how quickly they will get back to you about the scholarships? It sounds like a great opportunity and I have already studied a lot into it. I am assuming for the number of spots that competing for an AOG is very difficult since there are so few available. Is this correct?

Oh shoot I apologize. I just read a lot of older threads about AOG sand now I understand. Many people said they received their offers in late April/May after Admissions decided that those candidates could not be appointed....many of my schools say that May 1st is "decision date" so this may be an issue.

You should be putting plan B in place, meaning pick a school and send in deposit. DD has her Plan B all locked up just in case SA's do not work out this time around. Worst that can happen is you get AOG and have to potentially lose a few hundred dollars that you put on deposit at the college when you later choose to not attend for AOG. You wouldn't want to miss out on your "other" perfect school waiting on AOG decision :)

anon2021, if they are asking you about the aog scholarship, it is likely a good indication that you will get it. My thought is it also takes you off the direct admit list -- no matter what they say. Just IMHO though. There are very few spots, as indicated above, and the RC does not want to waste spots that he may have on naming students who do not want it. Make sure it is what you want. The prep year is right for some, wrong for others. You just have to decide if it is right for you. Last year, OAG pushed Marion, with I think 100% acceptance into USMA for those on OAG scholarship who completed the year at marion. Be sure to talk top the program's director, etc. They will put a full court press on you once you have an OAG offer.

I definitely expressed my interest to the RC about civil prep, but since each RC in the nation gets to submit a list of possible candidates and there are only 40/50 slots, I feel like it'll be slim that I'll get one. I also read from old threads that the AOG scholarship stated that you could still get a direct appointment

Anon2021 - Are you currently Triple Q'd? Did you receive a "3Q" letter in your portal before your RC asked you about the AOG opportunity? Thanks.

Yes, I am 3Q. Did not receive a portal update, but received an email from RC.
