I already took the 2 years of language, I just wasn't sure if most candidates continue their language all 4 years. My math is not my forte but I will definitely push for Calc senior year. Chemistry is extremely arduous for me. It feels like i toil aimlessly when i study for chem. Any tips for chem?
If you aspire to attend a Service Academy, I would definitely work on your Math and Chemistry skills. Hire a tutor or have another student/friend tutor you if needed. You will have to be strong in both these to succeed at any of the SAs. They are all STEM based schools, even if you plan on majoring in English or History, you will still be required to to take a significant amount math and sciences courses.

A lot of people are rushing to take calc in high school. I would only take calc if you are well ahead of the curve and advanced for your grade. It is a thousand times better to take an advanced Algebra/Trig course your senior year and go into college and learn calc. I cannot tell you the number of people who took calc in high school and retook it first semester and still did not do well thanks to due extremely difficult algebra and trig problems that must be solved for even a basic calc problem.

Alexander, I would caution against taking math that is too advanced for you. If you know you can at least make a B in Calc, go for it. Otherwise, don't overwhelm yourself. I would say the plan you've laid out looks great! You sound a lot like me, because math is not my forte either and I really hated chem. If you are interested in social studies and English, the classes you are taking look awesome, though! Whatever classes you take, make it your goal to get all "A"s! Good luck!

alexander and bailey, you do realize, right, that you will take the dreaded Chemistry 215, all kinds of MATH, several engineering courses, blah blah blah...
They don't call it "the Little Engineering College in the Rockies" because they excel at horticulture.

Now, Alexander, PLEASE! Go change your screen name. Thank you from a concerned (and knowledgeable) mother.

Finally, a place were having a love of math and chemistry will be a good thing
I'm no English or history buff.

Lol I won't lie, I've grown up an English nerd. Math and science were never my favorites, but I've always done reasonably well in them. It WILL be a challenge, but I think I can handle it haha!

It'll be hard but I have faith !

I've learned that it just takes a LOT of hard work to succeed. I won't be the smartest person there, but I am willing to work as hard as I have to to graduate from USAFA! It's my dream and I'm not about to let even Calculus stop me from fulfilling that goal!

I recommend taking all the math classes you can - so long as they aren't beyond you. Take them in order, learn the basics so you have a good foundation to build on.

Also remember that you will be required to take placement tests during BCT1. They will place you in the Calc class where you belong.

And don't be afraid of getting Extra Instruction (EI). It's highly recommended & NOT a sigma at the Academy. EVERYONE goes to EI at some point and MOST go many, many times. Don't let yourself get in a bind before you actually look for help. You don't want to be on academic probation (acpro) -- this means you're restricted from doing things until you get all your homework done! Seriously, this can be worse than your mother nagging you. But having said that, the Academy does all it can to make sure you have every opportunity to succeed. The rest is up to you.

What if we score really low on the placement tests? Do we automatically go on probation?

Having taken Calc I,II, III and differential equations/linear algebra from a 4 year university I promise you that Calculus isn't as bad as it seems!

Lol you have my undying respect! I am currently in AP Calc and it's killer! I think part of it is that I am trying to learn it in online school....I'm hoping that being in an actual classroom environment would help me learn it better!

Nope. They might put you in a remedial Calc 1 course, but it definitely won't put you on probation. Only your midterm (prog) and final grades can do that.

Thanks, haha. The hardest parts of AP Calc for me were the concepts. I can't imagine trying to learn them online, so good for you!

Awesome! Thanks for the info! Of course I hope to do well on the tests, but I am worried that I may not! And what kind of grades put you on probation? C's?

Haha, thank you! It's really difficult to try and master these concepts without real people teaching them and answering questions. So I am really looking forward to re-learning this the right way next year! (I am NOT going to try and validate out of Calc 1, because that would mean heading straight into Calc 2, which is NOT going to happen lol!)

C's are fine as long as they're your lowest grades. You can get on acpro in two main ways: having a cumulative GPA below 2.0 (C average) or by failing a class, regardless of the rest of your GPA. I think it used to be that two D's would put you on acpro as well but from what I've heard this semester that's not the case. That said, if you have 2 D's, your GPA is probably pretty close to that 2.0.
