I recently noticed this with regards to sit-ups during the APFT: "You may not swing your arms or use your hands to pull yourself up or push off the ground to obtain the up position. If this occurs your performance in the event will be terminated."

Can this be clarified? Specifically, is it okay to swing your elbows closer together during the upward motion?

yes. you just cant let your hands unlock or the rep wont be counted.
