Does anyone have an idea of how many applicants there have applied per year recently? When I google this, the numbers range from 7,000 to 25,000. Some make it sounds like it’s hard to get and others make it sound like just about everyone get one.

You have to be careful about what numbers you look at. Some people report the number as anyone who opens a file, whether or not they are qualified. Some of the numbers are only those that completed the application process and made it to the board.

Univ of North GA reported - For the academic year 2018-2019, more than 7,000 high school senior applications for the scholarship were reviewed.
About 3,000 applicants were awarded a scholarship. About 25% of those were 4-year scholarships and 75% were 3-year scholarships.

It would be interesting to know how many were awarded each Board. Were most awarded at first, second or third Boards?

When our son did not get an AROTC scholarship on the 1st Board, he had contact with the person he had interviewed with (ROO perhaps?). I'm not sure of the details, but my son did tell me that the officer had told him that very few scholarships were handed out with the first board. I'm not sure if there were fewer granted due to the technical issues, or whatever had happened, but my son came away from that communication (might have been a text or email) with the feeling that the majority "50%-60%" of the scholarships (his recollection) were going to be doled out at the 2nd board. He also relayed to him that this year was very, very competitive for 4-year full scholarships.

@TexasAggie204 - I have heard the same thing regarding the competitiveness of this years candidates. It will be interesting to see the stats (if they are released) regarding this years winners. My DS was fortunate to receive a 4-Year on the 1st Board. We are still waiting on the NROTC-MO 2nd Board - results in April! Keeping fingers crossed for everyone still in the hunt!

Only about 400 were offered from the 1st board

Where did you get the data from regarding the 400 awards? I have searched but couldn't find anything.
Directly from a PMS... also was told that only 400 were offered from first board out of 2300 applicants.

Page 4 of this slideshow by the Cadet Command CG from 2019 is the most specific, (presumably) reliable data I have seen regarding numbers of applicants, including completed, boarded, and offered AROTC 4-year scholarships that I have seen. It is from the class of 2022 cycle, so keep that in mind. In any event, it looks somewhat different than the sorts of vague numbers I have seen tossed around. Interestingly, I think the point he's trying to make, not so subtly, is that 4Y AROTC winners compare very favorably to West Point appointees.

14,135 Applicants

6,260 Qualified

5,164 Boarded

1,468 Selected

1373 SAT Avg

Those are 3YR and 4YR combined for selected?
