Im finishing up my junior year in high school, and I have been accepted into Summer Seminar. I do have an applicant file open for the Class of 2015 and my current status is: APPLICANT, COMPETITIVE APPLICATION. I got a letter in the mail, recently from AFA saying that i have the potential to compete for appointment based on my summer seminar application. I wanted to know, when do they actually tag someone as a CANDIDATE and when do candidate kits go out? I tried calling my Academy counselor, but can't seem to get in touch with him. Ive also been seeing stuff on this forum but I dont actually see a good answer out there.
Anyone else who is in the same situation, feel free to join in, the more input, the better.

my son is in the same boat...finishing his junior year and got into SS. He's going 3rd session, how about you? We are starting his process to get an appointment from our congressman or senator, he's working hard on grades, and trying to get in better shape for the CFA:thumb:

If you are not in touch yet with your ALO I would recommend that. My son has talked to his ALO on the phone a couple of times and a couple of emails. They plan to meet face-to-face as soon as he's done with finals in a couple of weeks.

Good luck to you!

I am in fact going to session 3 of SS myself! I am doing exactly the same things that you mentioned about your son. I have spoken to my ALO over the phone but he is still currently finishing up business with 2014 appointees and said he will devote more time to 2015 applicants during the summer.

My DS status says the same thing. On the USAFA website under admissions timeline it says

"Starting in August, Candidate Kit instructions are mailed to qualified candidates from whom the pre-candidate questionnaires have been received, screened and approved."

Right now all your candidate can do is work on applying for a nomination.

ALSO, mine changed. I just happened to check it over the weekend and it was a new person. Does this happen often? I had already gotten to contact and meet my previous ALO! I guess I have to start again, heh.

^ YES, AP week is over for me! Now I can finally get to work on ROTC apps. :D

Yep...ALO's do change. We have a limited amount of folks and when one or more retire, we have to "shuffle" the schools.

In AZ, to give you an idea of the job this is...we have 30 ALO's...and 587 schools...figure out how many each of us has. And when one retires, unless we can find a new ALO...they all get "re-shuffled." So...it's not uncommon.

But no worries...we're ALL very good at this! :thumb:

Mine was also changed after about a month into the summer. The ALO that I had was currently working with 26 kids. I can understand why he decided to transfer me.

Later,

Brian

What kind of stuff did you guys say in your first e-mail? Like I figured, "Hello, my name is such and such. I am an applicant to USAFA and I wanted to introduce myself." What else??

I introduced myself and asked a specific question that I had about the academy. I don't think you really NEED to introduce yourself unless you have questions. They'll contact you for the interview.
