Does the application process start Junior Year or Senior Year? Is it the same timing for athletes who are being recruited?

Juniors right now can begin to apply by applying to NASS and getting set up as a candidate. Then once you complete junior year you start the application stops in the CIS portal etc etc

The above response refers to USNA, not USMMA. USMMA does not have a summer recruitment program like the other academies. Because Midshipmen have to spend an entire year at sea, the academic calendar runs nearly eleven months per year, so there is not really any time for a summer session. The exceptions are summer school for those who fail a class and indoctrination for incoming plebe candidates.

To answer your specific question, the USMMA application opens May 1 of your junior year. The timing is the same for recruited athletes. I would recommend getting as much of the application done as possible before starting your senior year. Teacher evaluations often slow the process down, so it is a good time to give them a heads up and get summertime contact information for them. You will be way ahead of the game if you have your DoDMERB exams done during the summer so you have time to fix any unexpected disqualifications. Also, get your CFA done during the summer while the weather is good and to avoid any risk of injury during fall or winter sports.

Also, remember the concurrent application process for nominations from your members of Congress.
Check their individual websites for deadlines. Good luck!

Application timing is the same for athletes, but communication will be specific to individual. DD started communicating early Spring Jr year after States (best times at Regionals/States in Feb Jr yr and those inputted into Recruit Me and collegeswimming(dot) com, selected USMMA and USCGA on her list; got a ping and that started the communication), overnight visit in April Junior year, and organized/periodic/routine contact since then. She completed application 09/24, LOA 10/14, nom 12/18, appointment 12/23. Coaches were her application advisors outside of her admissions counselor.

Start reaching out to your congressman... name recognition still has a lot of value! Girls/Boys State is big

Way back in my time, I started the process during my junior year, but was angling for another federal academy at the time.

USMMA is D3, so coaches can start talking to you at any time. DD1 got interest from coach sophomore year, stayed in touch junior year and went for overnight visit, then applied summer before senior year.

My sons started in junior year so they could have opportunity to attend summer programming like SLE, Summer Seminar, GenCyber, Military sponsored camps (e.g., Society of American Military Engineers) and Boys State. Summer of their junior year, they began the service academy and senior military college applications, ROTC Scholarship applications, Congressional Nomination applications. They communicated with their counselors, administrators and teachers to let them they they would be requesting their recommendations and evaluations.

What does DD1 mean?

Boys State and Girls State are statewide leadership training programs sponsored by the American Legion throughout the country. Youth are eligible to attend the week-long training between their Junior and senior year of high school. It is a really good learning experience. All five service academies love seeing this experience on an applicant's record and award substantial leadership credit for attending. It is run somewhat differently in different states, so check with your guidance counselor or local American Legion representative for details. Ours requires a nomination from the school principal and our school only nominates one boy and one girl each year.

I think by name recognition, the post means that applicants should attend all possible service academy events in your area. Most MOC's have sign-in sheets and they keep track of who attends. There is a fine line between demonstrating sincere interest and being an obnoxious kiss-up. Introducing yourself to the MOC or his/her service academy rep and asking an intelligent question or two is a good thing provided you are well-dressed and don't monopolize their time.

Our best experience at one of these events was when our rep had a dead battery after the presentation, and our son jump started her car. Name recognition was not a problem after that, and he got three noms.

disregard my post above, i was in the wrong thread!! ugh where is the delete button  sorry!!!!!

I am unsure of what you mean. Name recognition? Girls/Boys State?

Sorry... meaning if you start reaching out via email etc. by the time interviews “roll” around, it can really help you, especially when they have been hearing from you... it most definitely helped my kid! Look into getting nominated for Boy’s State. That is decided by your local American Legion with an interview. Best of luck!!

Go to the Service Academy nights. Dress sharply and introduce yourself.
