Application question

In the candidate personal data record form, there is a question about my families annual income from last year. Is there any benefit/harm in answering this question or leaving it as "prefer not to answer"? Does anyone know what purpose this question serves?

It's a simple question aimed at collecting demographic information. I think you'd be better off answering with a value; it's one more piece of data that they use to assess candidates, and the more data, the better.
