Application Question

Hello all,

I've heard from multiple sources that the earlier you get your application in, the better. I've also seen that you can get nominations from multiple sources. I'm eligible for the presidential nomination. I was wondering that once I get that nomination, and submit my application, am I still eligible to receive a MoC nomination? Am I still able to get other nominations after I turn in my application?

Thank you

Submit the BEST QUALITY application early.

If you go to the Nominations forum here on SAF, and read the Stickies at the very top of the forum, many of your questions are answered.

“There are many nomination sources and applicants are encouraged to apply to all available sources. This normally includes a U.S. Representative, two U.S. Senators and the Vice President of the United States.”

The above is the second sentence of the first paragraph in the Nominations section of USNA.edu.

If you have not yet read every page, dropdown and link on USNA.edu, your primary source, paying attention to detail and taking extensive notes, I strongly encourage you to do so. The application process is a long road, so organizing your approach to the complex To Do list is critical to a successful application submission.

Applying for Nominations and submitting your application are parallel and independent processes, for the elected official ones. You will have to research each elected official’s website and follow each one’s specific directions. You will be tracking many different actions at the same time.

If you’re eligible for a Presidential, get that one done so you have a nom in the bag while you are building out the rest of your application. Though those are unlimited, only 100 in each class are offered an appointment using that nom source.

First this forum has a tremendous amount of great info and advice. My DS and us (his parents, really appreciate it).

My DS is doing well preparing his MOC nomination applications. As well as working hard on his USNA application, with the goal of having the majority complete by August.

I had a question regarding the military nomination categories.

Based on my service (24 years AD), he is eligible for the Presidential category. He is also eligible for the dependent of a disabled veteran category (SDVET) based on my rating (100%). After reviewing the nomination instructions, it appears he will only receive a nomination under the disabled category as the instructions state those eligible for SDVET won’t also receive a Presidential. It seems the big difference is the number of appointments allowed under each: Presidential, 100 per year (400 total); and SDVET 65 total.

I’m concerned if he applies for the SDVET category, then he may limit his chances since we have no idea if the 65 total appointments may already be filled or close to being filled from previous years.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations with this situation?

thanks in advance

I’ll also post this in the nomination forum as well, sorry for the double tap.

I don't know if it's possible to find out how many SDVET appointments are already allocated. It would seem logical that they would allocate about 1/4 each year (as they do for MOC. NROTC, and Presidential) but that is a huge assumption.

On thing to keep in mind is that while there are 100 spots per year available to those with presidential noms, there are usually 700-800 presidential nominations issued. The odds are slightly better than an MOC nom (1 of 8 vs. 1 of 10).

According to the class profile for class of '22, there were 77 nominations under the category of Children of Deceased / Disabled Vets. So - if there are approx 15 spots available to 77 candidates ( about 1 of 5) then it seems that the SDVET nom MIGHT be a better bet than the presidential.

This is one case where it might be a good idea for your DS to contact his admissions rep to see if there is an advantage to either one. The general guidance is to apply for all nomination sources that are available. However, in your case, it seems that you need to choose which one to apply to , and you can't apply to both. It seems like a fair question to ask admissions.

I SUSPECT, that there are fewer SDVET noms per available spot, and that the odds may be better pursuing that, but that is a HUGE ASSUMPTION, and it all depends on the competitiveness of the other candidates on that slate

best of luck!

While the regulations limit those under this category to 65 appointments , there is no regulation, to my knowledge, that precludes your DS from applying for MOC nominations sources (excluding Presidential as you point out) . Should he secure that, he'll have two lottery tickets in the game.

Actually, adding the SDVET potential nom gives this candidate 5 potential noms to apply for.

Yes, you are still eligible to receive a MOC nomination even though you have a Presidential nom, and have turned in your application. In some cases, it may not be necessary. Two of my Mid Kids were offered their appointments in October, because they had a Presidential Nom and had their application completed. The appointment came prior to their MOC boards, so they called their MOCs and let them know. They happen to be applying to more than one academy, so they went ahead with the interviews seeking nominations USAFA, rather than USNA.
