I just checked my son's application status on the USMMA web site. It is now listed as conditional. What does that mean ?

Thanks Luigi 59. WOW! this is great news. My son will be on cloud nine when he finds out.

Congrats! I have left over bubble wrap for your kid if you need some. Keep him injury free & get those nominations to secure it all up! Let us know how things are going. You need to practice saying "GO KP"!

Thanks Jamzmom , He received the LOA yesterday. Yeah! very excited. I am sure we will have questions in the months ahead. Bubble wrap , ha! great idea. GO KP!

So in summary, those who get conditional application status are guaranteed inside the academy once they complete what they are missing?

or are they just considered in?

Well, not exactly. There are many factors that go into appointments.

Example:
If you have an LOA = Letter of Assurance (not alot of those appointed get these)
If you obtain a nomination
If you pass all the DODMERB requirements
If you keep your grades up to par

You will be pretty well set to go in IF you don't break your leg or get arrested two weeks before Indoc.
Just saying is that there are no guarantees. Things happen sometimes. Just be sure they don't happen to you ok?

Just as jamzmom said, even LOA's have strict contingencies.

A conditional status candidate could be offered a LOA, which reads:

Congratulations! The Candidate Evaluation Board has recommended you for an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, the premier Maritime Institute in the Nation. Accordingly, I have reserved an appointment for you contingent upon a nomination and continued excellent work in school. When these matters are resolved, you will be appointed to the USMMA Class of 2012.

(emphasis theirs, not mine)

It appears that there is no gray area, no ambiguity. If the two contingencies in the LOA are met, an appointment WILL be offered.

wow, thanks for the information. The reason I ask is because I also received a conditional status on the USMMA application page. Being a swimmer, I have also been talking to the swim coach there for a year now ( He's a really good guy - Coach Tedesco) and he checked my file for me the other day. He e-mailed me as well saying I have a conditional status, and that all I'm missing is my CFA (which I'm doing this weekend).

 I just wasn't sure about what a conditional status really meant.

But, I do appreciate the input and I get excited every time I go on these forums. :thumb:
