Application submission question

My DD received a call yesterday from the academy asking if she plans on submitting her application. She does not want to do EA so even though her application is ready, she’s till working on improving her SAT score. So just to be clear, she should not hit the application submit button until her test scores are where she wants them to be? Thanks!

She should contact her AO and get some feedback. Are they encouraging her to apply EA? If she does not feel like she has her best application ready now she can submit RA at any time, even before the EA deadline. She will be able to update her RA application as new information becomes available, like fall grades and updated SAT scores. Once her application is in, that should trigger the DODMERB exam, which is definitely best done early in case a waiver or even just additional medical information is required.

Ok thanks. I don’t think she thought she could submit it before the early action deadline without it being considered for early action.

I believe my cadet told me there were 2 buttons to choose from at the submittal point. If she gets there and it isn't the case, she can just wait until the 16th to put it in.

You definitely can. I recall there was a check box (or perhaps a button as @Fairfaxmom mentioned) where a candidate had to indicate that they were applying EA. If they didn’t check the box or whatever it was, even if they submitted an application prior to the EA deadline, they would not be considered for EA.

Ohhh! So she can submit it and request regular action and then still add updated scores. They must have seen her application sitting there with no action and wondered if she dropped off.

I highly doubt they are checking to see what applications are sitting cold. Has your DD attended AIM? Or a recruited athlete? I would think they are looking for her application. My DS applied EA, not the best SAT score, was deferred to RA, then offered appointment to prep, currently at NAPS. In my opinion, there isn’t a negative to applying EA. If the Academy feels your DD would be a great applicant in RA then DD will be deferred, if not then you know early in the process. And just so you know you can add and update your application and scores up until the file is pulled to be reviewed which is quite some time after the deadline. The benefit to doing EA versus RA is that you start the medical process earlier which can also take “quite some time” especially if there is a DQ and applicant needs a waiver.

Thanks! She did got to AIM virtually. She’s going this weekend for a visit and plans to take the fitness test. Hopefully all goes well.

The negative of applying EA if you think you need to improve your SAT/ACT or PFE (for example) is that your application could be denied completely. Not everyone from EA is rolled over to the regular Regular Admissions pool. It is true that you can continue to add to your application after submitting and before you are reviewed. It is also true that you can submit now, but check that you want to be considered for Regular Admissions (not EA).

Agree, not everyone is deferred to RA but if Admissions feels applicant would be competitive in RA then they will definitely defer. I don’t believe there is a limit on deferments. Two advantages, 1. Find out earlier In process if you are competitive if not and still have ability to improve scores and 2. Starts the medical process earlier. Was told by coach that last year over 60% of appointment candidates needed medical waiver (don’t quote me). And that process is time consuming. My DS applied EA deadline or year I believe 10/12ish and wasn’t 100% waived and cleared until 3rd week of May. All just my opinion, have you DD do what she thinks is best for her.
