I just love how Cadets are given in-state tuition. Not only does that make them affordable, it's make them the MOST affordable of any college I applied to!

Congratulations! My son is a freshman cadet there currently and he truly loves it. If you were to friend him on FB, you'd see how committed he is to the program and becoming an officer and a leader.

If you or your parents have any questions as you're getting through that Pre-FROG Week Cadet Manual, feel free to reach out via PM -- we started a UNG Cadet Parents' online group. It's still very small, but already very awesome.

Does anyone know the different requirements for entrance into extracurricular groups at UNG like the Aggressor Platoon and Mountain Order of Colombo. From what I see on YouTube there's a huge rivalry between the two, does anyone have experience with either?

Basically speaking, for Aggressors or Colombo:

* Full-time first semester freshmen may join even though they have no GPA. Second-semester freshmen and upperclassmen may try out if they have at least a 2.4 GPA.

* You have to have a satisfactory conduct record, and you have to satisfactorily complete a “try-out” monitored by a faculty advisor.

* All cadets, other than first semester freshmen, must have a 2.4 cumulative GPA in order to maintain active membership in Aggressors or Colombo. At mid-terms, if your GPA falls below 2.4, you go on probation and can't participate in training.

Try-outs are difficult. This fall, I heard that there were something like 40 cadets who went to the first try-out for Aggressors. Last I heard there were less than 10 remaining. Colombo started out with 35, and is down to 8.

I do believe there is a rivalry between Aggressors and Colombo. How could there not be? Both groups enjoy prestige at the university, respected for their commitment to long hours of training. Does one claim to be better than the other? Probably. But at the same time, the leaders of Aggressors and Colombo are also the leaders of the Corps so it simply has to be a friendly rivalry. The two groups put on demonstrations regularly where they fight each other. These things don't happen without some degree of coordination at the top-most level so that nobody gets hurt.

I strongly suggest that first-semester cadets wait at least one semester to try out. Get established in academics, and listen and learn from cadre before you commit to a co-curricular specialty group. Be patient, so that you know you're choosing the one that's right for you.

I'm just basing my opinion from the YouTube video I saw of the two groups having their annual fight on campus..... Search "Colombo vs. The Aggressors" haha :thumb:

I know exactly what you're basing it on but that annual fight is just, what, a half hour out of the whole academic year? It's nothing when compared with the full year of training that goes on in each of those groups.

Acceptance letter came in the mail today..... Awesome

What's life like as a Frog at UNG? Are phones and social media allowed? Besides Frog Week, what are some unique things that Frogs go through at UNG (like VMI has Rat Challenges, etc)?

Did you go to National Leadership Challenge weekend at UNG? Highly recommend that, as it's very much like FROG week, only FROG week is longer and more challenging, physically. Check out the FROG week daily albums on the North Georgia Cadet Admissions FB page, and also check out the NCOA daily albums on the FB page. Those albums will give you a good idea of what's involved in FROG week and general training. Note that at the end of FROG week, there is a 3-mile run up Crown Mountain and back to campus. At the end of that run, you graduate from FROG week and are no longer a frog, though supposedly you will always remember your "froggy buddies" and your freshman company.

First semester freshmen are "on quarters" until they achieve a minimum GPA and have an established good conduct record -- meaning that they are required to be in their rooms after 8 pm. (You can get passes for library or tutoring in the academic center.) But this has been good for my son, since it was basically forced study time.

DS was promoted to cadet private after getting his midterm grades and passing scores on PT tests today. (All the freshmen who achieved a minimum grade level in classes and a minimum PT score were promoted.)

One of the things that I think DS loves most about UNG is that after FROG week was over, DS did have his cell phone and laptop, and we did video chats a couple times a week and other than closed weekends once a month, he's been free to go hiking, tubing, camping and general exploring with other cadets on the weekends, which he absolutely LOVES. You can borrow camping gear from the rec center for free.

You probably figured out by now that he's in a specialty group. That training has been the most intense thing. It is tough, mentally and physically. But he is progressing and embracing the suck, as they say, and learning many new skills that I imagine will prove useful for LDAC, in the Army and in life in general.

Best thing about that is that if it really turned out to be too much for him, he could drop out of it at any time.

If you can go to NLC weekend, that will probably tell you whether or not UNG is the place for you.

Sent you a PM.

Actually -- correction -- the number of candidates remaining in Colombo is more than 8. I am not certain the correct number, but last I heard there were actually more like 15 candidates remaining. I also heard that the Aggressors were bringing their overall numbers down, and so were more selective this semester.

DS accepted to UNG the other day. Very excited to possibly head back down to Dahlonega:thumb:

Congratualtions - exciting times ahead:thumb:

Congratulations

Congrats to you and your son. UNG is incredible. It was a school that was not on our radar when DS started looking at colleges. By the end of the process it was his #1 choice over schools he had been accepted to like Norwich, VMI, Citadel, and a few others. DS did contemplate taking the ECP program at MMI where my son was offered a 2 year scholarship. They also recruited him to wrestle there. In the end DS chose UNG and it was the right choice for him. He loves the school and is majoring in Criminal Justice. This past summer he attended the Summer Language Institute at the school and studied Arabic. He received a scholarship which paid for the tuition for SLI. If your son wants to do this it is a great deal because he can knock out all of his language requirements. DS also is involved in some extra-curricular activities too like wrestling, Cadet Chaplain Corp, and Swing Dancing! Yes, I said swing dancing (the Charleston etc.) and that threw me for a loop because my son had never done anything like that before. But the 7 or 8 female dance partners may have had some influence on him to give it a try ;) But seriously he now enjoys swing dancing and likes to attend the dances they have on campus. DS also joined the National Guard and drills on campus each month. As for me I love Dahlonega, Ga. I know my son is in a safe environment and is at a school where non sense in not tolerated. DS is doing well academically too and has a 3.9 gpa so far and will have earned 40 credits after this semester. Tel your DS to get involved on campus and to keep his studies as a top priority over everything else and he will be fine. Take care.
