Hello, I am currently a sophomore in high school and have a few questions. Recently visited USAFA while in Colorado Springs and instantly fell in love. Since I am still too young for all the application steps, what can I do now to prepare myself? I feel like gaining a head-start at this age will help me tremendously in the coming years. Any answers would be appreciated, thanks!

Start taking the SAT or ACT if you are financially able to. While content with my own scores, I wish I started taking them in my sophomore year.

Your timing is good. Sophomore and junior years are good times to research and educate yourself. By spring of your junior year, you will be gearing up for your “campaign.”

Be sure you are falling in love with the Air Force and looking beyond to the minimum 5 years of obligated service as an officer. USAFA is not your end goal, but a way station to commissioned officer status.

First, read every page, dropdown, hamburger menu and link at USAFA.edu. That is your primary resource, and most answers are there. Take notes, start building a timeline of action items and due dates.

Pay attention to the USAFA.edu section on Nominations. Then, go to your two Senators’ and your Congressional Representative’s websites and search for their service Academy Nominations page. Again, read carefully, take notes. If there are Service Academy Admissions or info sessions, attend them. Sophomore year is not too early.

Plan ahead to use your two remaining summer vacations wisely. You can apply for USAFA’s summer program for your rising senior summer. Ditto Boys’ State or Girls’ State for leadership experience.

Research USNA.edu, USMA.edu, USMMA.edu, to ensure you have explored them and ruled them in or out thoughtfully.

Research college AFROTC and the scholarships. Many do not get into USAFA on their first try, and ROTC is a fine way to go, either for a commission or a basis for another USAFA application cycle.

Here on SAF, read the Stickies located at the very top of the Nominations forum. Browse through the USAFA forum. The same questions and discussions occur cyclically. Use the Search function to look for “stats” or “chance me” posts. You’ll see what candidates bring to the table.

The Acronym List for SAF is in Community Information.

Work hard in school, excel in your STEM classes, stay out of trouble - and be open to the journey and how it may turn and twist.

My son started his journey to USAFA as a sophomore, so this is actually the perfect time.

Perhaps the best thing I could recommend is seeing if you can make it to Summer Seminar between your junior or senior years. This got us organized early. Taking the SAT/ACT tests early, getting into one sport and at least one extra-curricular activity where you have a leadership role, and focusing on STEM classes and getting great grades would be others.

+1 to Capt MJ

Also, start getting involved in extracurricular activities, including (but not limited to):
A varsity sport
Clubs where you can adopt a leadership role
Honor Societies/Community Service Clubs

Also try:
Civil Air Patrol, school newspaper, theatre, etc. If you're religious, try to find executive roles within your youth group. Clubs that require involvement and effort. If you've ever wanted to start a club, put a lot of effort into doing that. Student council/government is good too.

The Academy wants to see that you're committed to your pursuits. They'd rather see heavy involvement and leadership in 3-4 clubs rather than thin, uninterested involvement in 8.

Begin training physically now. The CFA is a hard test to pass, but it can be handled with a little bit of training. You don't have to go full-ham on the training right now, but start running, do some push-ups and sit-ups every day, etc.

Perhaps most importantly, strive for academic excellence. Start working on SAT/ACT stuff. Take AP/IB courses if you can. Keep your grades up. Average GPA entering the Academy is about 3.75 unweighted. Strive to beat that. Push yourself, and take harder classes. Look on academyadmissions.com for academic requirements. Don't slack off and try to make it easy for yourself, because it's not going to be easy at USAFA.

Best of luck to you. Hopefully I'll get to see you in a couple of years. Aim High.
