I am wondering, do you apply for possible self Prep to cover bases or do you wait until you know for sure if you received an appointment or not or sponsored prep spot?

My DS did not apply to MMI until late March. He was accepted to several schools but he researched MMI and wanted to visit. After visit he decided he wanted this as his plan B even though he had ROTC scholarship. I din’t Now about other prep schools but you can apply to MMI until June. The earlier you apply will allow MMI time to determine if you qualify for scholarships. DS was late in the process but he earned a scholarship which covered 50% of his tuition.

Do you think my DS apply as a regular admission student or go right through academy prep program admissions? I know I’m jumping the gun a bit. we haven’t heard yet and I don’t want to assume that he is or is not getting an appointment. Just trying to plan so we’re not behind the eight ball.

It’s up to you. I know when we visited and after speaking with Col. Bowen (SAP head) MMI’s goal is for an appointment for your cadet. If you receive an appointment they will reimburse 100% of deposits by May 1st. If you receive a prep scholarship they will honor it. I don’t see any harm in applying early; however, I would call admissions after January and confirm to ensure the info I gave us correct and nothing changed.

I forgot to mention your DS would want to apply for the SAP program.

I recommend reading the Sticky about reapplying at the top of the USNA Forum.
For USNA at least, the gouge is that attending a 4 year college, and taking a rigorous STEM program similar to the Plebe schedule is more effective than Self Prep.
