I turned 18 just a couple days ago and as I already have an appointment to USNA, I didn't know if I needed to apply or not, so I picked up the papers from the post office anyway. It says Cadets/Midshipmen of Service Academies don't need to apply, but it also says I need to apply within 30 days of my 18th birthday. I won't be at the Academy in 30 days, so do I still need to fill it out?

It also says that once I leave the Academy, I will need to fill one out as long as I am still under the age of 26. So should I fill it out now anyways so I don't have to worry about it later?

I would still sign up for it because of two reasons.

1st: If you do end up needing to fill it out later, why not just do it now while you have the time and get it out of the way.

2nd: There could be complications even if you are committed to an academy because the government doesn't necessarily know that you are going quite yet.

Register.

You will find out that when you do your security clerance paperwork, it asks for your selective service registration number.

Registration not required for cadets and midshipman of:

  • US Naval Academy
  • US Coast Guard Academy
  • US Military Academy
  • US Air Force Academy
Registration IS required for midshipmen of the US Merchant Marine Academy.

Young men serving in the military on full-time active duty do not have to register. Those attending the service academies do not have to register. However, if a young man leaves the military before turning 26, he must register.

Okay, so I went to apply online and it says "You have already been registered on Feb 10, 2012." My birthday is March 10. Could the Academy have registered me as soon as I was eligible? They do have all the information necessary to do it...

You might've checked a box or something whilst filling out the FAFSA. I think forwarding information to Selective Service was mentioned on that application.

We didn't fill out the FASFA yet.

As I posted above, it doesn't matter as you do not have to register.

My DS is in the same position as the OP, and Luigi, I am not sure if you have addressed his question. DS turned 18 and has accepted his appointment, but he will not be "attending" the Academy until June 27th. Meanwhile, based on his date of birth, he is required to file with Selective Service now. In fact, on the registration status form he received from Selective Service, under Section B - Exemption Statement, it asks that you provide a copy of DD Form 4 or a letter from the Academy attesting your enrollment. Since he is not yet enrolled, he has no Form 4, nor can I imagine that the Academy will provide a letter attesting to his enrollment.

So in short, in response to the OP, I believe that you have to register with Selective Service if you will not be enrolled at the Academy within 30 days of your 18th birthday.

I noticed that a BGO sent you a PM. If s/he has information to share on this topic, perhaps it would benefit others as well?

Agree.

And if a student departs, he/she must register immediately.

btw, of note, the Selective Service excludes USCGA from those it deems "Service Academies."

Ouch!

Regarding registration - I don't think the world, or even your world, will end either way. It can't possibly hurt to register as I'm sure many have prior to attending an academy. Certainly true of re-applicants. Also, if you decide to wait, I don't think they are going to haul you off to prison prior to reporting to the academy. Much ado about little.

Here's what the SS site says of the "when" of registering ... and the consequential legal status of those failing to do so...

"Therefore, to be in full compliance with the law, a man turning 18 is required to register during the period of time beginning 30 days before, until 30 days after his 18th birthday...a 60-day window. Late registrations are accepted, but not once a man reaches age 26. Men who do not register within the 60-day window are technically in violation of the law and should register as soon as possible."

Seems that it creates an unnecessary conundrum for appointees. If appointees are 18 pr30 days prior to I-Day, register.

Thanks for the common sense advice. It is very much appreciated.

It really is quite easy to register for selective service. Besides, I know they will ask for your number during processing. On I-day you want to avoid "attention" from the detailers. Yes it's a little thing, but if detailer will take 10 minutes to "correct" the way a plebe holds his Dixie cup cover, might want to take care of this before you arrive. Just my humble opinion.

Accuracy is the goal, not inaccurate misstatements like your ignorant post above.

I understand you're trying to be funny, but your misinformation may confuse those who ar actually looking for accurate reliable information.

Those attending the US Coast Guard Academy, the US Military Academy, the US Air Force Academy, and the US Naval Academy are exempt.

There's this from the Selective Service website:

http://www.sss.gov/FSwho.htm

FULL-TIME MILITARY EXEMPTED FROM REQUIREMENT

Young men serving in the military on full-time active duty do not have to register. Those attending the service academies do not have to register. However, if a young man leaves the military before turning 26, he must register.

And if you have any question about the US Coast Guard or the Academy being a branch of the military or armed forces, this is from the United States Code:

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/14/1

Title 14 › Part I › Chapter 1 › § 1

14 USC § 1 - Establishment of Coast Guard

The Coast Guard, established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times.

As other without agendas have posted, it's no big deal to register if you turn 18 before you enter a military academy, and if you turn 18 after you enter, you won't need to.

Whistle Pig's advice should be ignored.

No intent to be funny what so ever. Simply find it intriguing that the SS differentiates the USCGA from what it deems "Service Academies." Perhaps it's a function of not being an agency of the Department of Defense? From the Selective Service site:

Eh, I'm over it. If I wanted thorough and informed, the a U.S. federal government website isn't my first stop.
